Re: Compleatly new
Your best bet is to ask the GM for help, as they will be able to give not only general advice/instruction but also to give you ideas that will be a good fit for that specific game. You could ask the other players in that game for help or advice as well.
One thing I will warn you about, if "warn" is the right word here - character creation in rules-heavy games like D&D/Pathfinder tends to fall into two broad styles. On one hand is thinking of your character as a person first, then picking feats, skills, etc that seem like a good match for that person. On the other hand is focusing first on what combination of abilities will give you the best bonuses on whatever die rolls you want to be good at, then building up the person around that. Some people strongly prefer one or the other of these styles, other people find a way to balance them. It's a matter of personal preference. The reason I want to make you aware of this is so that if you ask someone for help with your character, and they prefer a style that you dislike, it might feel like a turn-off for the game, but really it's just that they're advising you in the way they like to play, not the way you have to do it.
That was more than I intended to write - I hope it all made sense...
