Hi! New to PbP.

Trying to get a feel for how it works before I jump into a game. My tabletop experience is mostly limited to D&D 3.5, 4E, and Pathfinder. I've played a couple games of Maid. I've read through the rules for a half dozen different systems and want to play something other than modern D&D.

Re: Hi! New to PbP.

Welcome aboard! Make sure to check out the FAQ section and be sure to read the first thread in every forum, they have all the specific rules for posting in those areas.

I've moved away from DnD myself. Depending on how far away from that style of game you're wanting to get, you can find all kinds of cool games. A few that I liked are; Lady-blackbird, Apocalypse World, Danger Patrol, Dungeon World and all of their derivative hacks.

Have fun!

Welcome, Viaken.

When you say, "other than modern D&D," do you mean a game set in a modern era using another system? Or are you looking for a fantasy game using a more recently-developed system, like Dungeon World or Dragon Age?

I mean, I don't want to use 3E, 3.5, 4E, 5E, or Pathfinder. Setting, I'm happy to try just about anything.

Re: Hi! New to PbP.

Well, if you want to get away from the Tolkien inspired stuff may I recommend the following: Exalted, GURPS, in particular their version of 'Bunnies and Burrows', (Fore Mentioned) Lady Blackbird, The Window, or Monsters and Other Childish Things. Of those the only one I have not personally played is the last but my friends all recommend it highly.

There are a multitude of systems and genres available on this site and you will soon find yourself embroiled in more games than you have time to play if you try to take in even 1/1000th of all that is on offer here, so pace yourself, and as sithraider said, read the FAQs and the rules threads of each forum: read them until you have them memorized, it will help you a great deal.

Re: Hi! New to PbP.

Btw, something I didn't see in the faq: what are the *AMP characters in game listings? I'm guessing A is adult, M is mature. What about the others?

There are a fair number of Savage Worlds (SW) games running at any given time.

In reply to Viaken (msg # 6):

A is Adult
M is Mature (as you had already figured those two out)
P means that the GM claims sole ownership to the game and the characters therein.
* means looking for players.

Re: Hi! New to PbP.

Good welcome, citizen. I'm new to rpol but not new to PbP. This site is a marvel of elegant simplicity, but I've been avoiding it until now due to some horror stories that turned out to be exaggerated (though they might have been true when I first heard them over a decade ago). It's not bad, from what I've seen. The people seem friendlier...

About PbP in general, most games will die after a few weeks or months. Once a game gets past a few months, though, it's chances of lasting the test of time increase dramatically.
