A newbie, but a happy one

Hello everyone :D

I'm a newbie to post anf play RPG having just discovered it this week following a lot of frustration at wanting to play an paper RPG but having no-one around me who's remotely interested!

I have played before, but sadly that was about 20 years ago and it was very poorly constructed games by two 13 year olds... you can imagine what they were like.

I'm keen to play anything interesting but probably D&D or Pathfinder, I don't know the rules or any systems but am keen to learn.

Is there anyone who'd be prepared to run a newbie game to help me learn the ropes? I promise once I've got the hang of it I'll be a committed player :D

A few questions though:
- How regularly are players expected to post in the games? Are timezones an issue?
- Do people use the same characters though multiple games?
- what happens if I can't post for a time (say 24 hours), do the rest of the party leave me standing or something?

As you can see, I basically have no idea. I can tell jokes if that helps?

Any help is appreciated, I'm looking forward to getting to know you all a bit better.

Re: A newbie, but a happy one

Welcome.

First, it's against this forum's rules for anyone to offer you a spot in a game on this forum. You should post your '[newbie game' request in the Wanted - GM forum.

Every game (you'll find a lot of them looking for players on the Wanted - Players forum) is separate and under the control of its own GM. Many GMs welcome inexperienced players or players new to the particular system, as do their fellow players.

Posting requirements are up to each GM. I'd say that most want a daily post, which is a rarely attained ideal. A very few are looking for multiple posts per day. Many want (or will settle for) several per week and a few ask for just one post per week.

As you might deduce from that, timezones are rarely a problem.

Most people create a unique character for each game, though some re-use or modify characters they have already made. Character generation is guided by the GM.

GMs also decide what will happen to characters whose players fail to post. In the interest of advancing the game, most make a rule that they will post for your character after a given interval. That might be a week or two in narrative sections of the story or it might be 24 hours in combat.

Hope you have a great time here.

In reply to Gaffer (msg # 2):

Thanks for the reply, and apologies for posting inappropriately!

I think the most sensible option is to just get stuck into a game and see how it goes :D

It seems like just the thing I've been looking for, especially considering that one post a day minimum isn't too hard a target to go for

In reply to RPYorkshire (msg # 3):

It could be really different depending on the game.
I mostly play as Free-form  Gm  and even if officially  people say the post daily  just a few really do.
There is a tollerance that depends on situation.

Give yourself time to know people and different styles and groups

I'm having a good look round and getting a feel for what's most appropriate to me, thanks for the advice.

I'm surprised most don't post daily as I was expecting it to be a bit faster than that! I think it will be a good starting point for me though to make sure I'm consistent.

As a general question, should I get familiar with a rule set before my first game? And if the answer is yes, how deep should I go?

There are a lot of people here who use the site simply because games can run at a slower pace - for some a daily posting requirement would actually be considered a drawback.

I agree. If it was a requirement to post a certain number of times it would become a worry at times, especially if work overruns or something. The last thing needed is a fun hobby becoming a stress!

I have set myself a personal target though because of the effort GMs need to put in to running a game.

Another question - is it ok to post in the GM wanted forum asking for someone to run me through a game as a learning experience?

Re: A newbie, but a happy one

Absolutely.  Even if it's a training game, you still need to find a GM.

Re: A newbie, but a happy one

Great, now I just need to get an idea of what game I'm going to start with and have a look at the rules. I sense a lot of reading coming my way!
