In reply to PhantomP09 (msg # 1):

Bumping is an internet thing in any online forum that moves topics around based on the most recent comment on the discussion thread.

What you are doing when you "bump" is making a post at the bottom of the thread. This forces the forum software to re-order the discussion topics on the page, and "bump"ing that particular topic to the top of the order.

You're essentially doing this to ensure that your topic comes up early on, and gets more people to look at it.

Since RPOL seems to order topics based on the most recent post to the discussion topic, then you'll see a lot of bumps.

(Players Wanted seems to have a time limit on bumps, which is probably a good thing. Otherwise, you'd get a lot of spam to bump stuff up.)

Re: what does bump mean

People 'spam-bumping' is the entire reason they put a one-week limit on bumps there.  You can still reply to older messages, they just won't get rotated back to the top of the list until there's a reply AFTER the one-week time limit.

And there are two different methods of 'bumping' a topic...one is to actually take the time to compose another message, sharing new (and hopefully relevant) information and updating details from the original post.

The other is to just type 'bump' (or anything else, really) into a reply.  The system registers that as a new response and rotates the thread to the top of the list again.  This is, by far, the more common option in something like 'Wanted: Players' or similar threads, because the original post has all the relevant details, most of the time.

Re: what does bump mean

If you ever want to see some excessive bumping, stop by the Gaia forums. That's where bumping gets ridiculous. There are entire forum sections full of threads dedicated to bumping. That really happens more because you earn gold for posting, and the fact that the place is chock full of bored teenagers.
