Hey I'm new!

I have no idea what is going on. It is over my head. Any tips for a newby about character creation and gameplay maybe?

Re: Hey I'm new!

Well first off, read the faqs and help section.

As for character creation. Read the Request to join information for a game. Get a idea of who the character is that you will be playing, then submit it. Actual game play? Just say what your character does. Mind the rules of the game and age rating though.

Re: Hey I'm new!

As Mereval implies different systems have different character generation methods and different genres and stories require different character types. So no single set of tips can apply to every character you create.

You need to understand the setting and the narrative to figure out what will work in that particular instance.

Explore. Expand. Enjoy.

Re: Hey I'm new!

I recommend picking a game that sounds interesting (through the Wanted - Players forum, if you aren't already in one) and asking the GM for whatever help you need.  As the others said, things run a little differently in each game, and it will be easier to get help from someone who knows the specifics.

Re: Hey I'm new!

It really depends so much on not just the system, but the GM as well.  Some GM's want you to have a ready character and know the rules by heart, others like myself don't mind holding hands throughout the process and teaching newbies.

In reply to pfarland (msg # 5):

In the request to join public message of the game you are interested in you should find everithing you need. This is expecially true for a free-form game.
If you select something different from free form I'd suggest a game mech you are already familiar with, at least to start.
