Re: Clue me in
In reply to chartreuseClock (msg # 1):
Welcome to Rpol and the world of role-playing games (RPGs). Games can be divided into two types.
Free-form games played without many written rules and (mostly) without dice in which the players and the person 'in charge' of the game (the Gamemaster or GM) engage in 'cooperative story telling, creating the narrative and settling any conflicts through consensus and dramatic impetus. Player's posts tend to be long and descriptive.
System games are played using a particular set of rules (Dungeons and Dragons is the best known of these, though there are dozens more) which provide a framework for conflict resolution (usually involving dice or some other 'random intermediary)and often a particular 'game world' in which the story takes place. The Game Master (often called Dungeon Master in D&D) is in charge of rules interpretation and the overall storyline and/or world setting. Some systems may be 'rules-light' while others are very structured. The GM may also choose to run a system with more or less rules structure, whatever the system.
