Clue me in

I joined this because a friend kept saying how much fun their games are here so I got curious. I have been RPing for the last decade or so but I never did a 'game'. Heck, I don't even know what it really means. Is there a dice or something? Someone fill me in and maybe tell me which 'games' are okay for beginners to go in and maybe not completely ruin.

Re: Clue me in

In reply to chartreuseClock (msg # 1):

Welcome to Rpol and the world of role-playing games (RPGs). Games can be divided into two types.

Free-form games played without many written rules and (mostly) without dice in which the players and the person 'in charge' of the game (the Gamemaster or GM) engage in 'cooperative story telling, creating the narrative and settling any conflicts through consensus and dramatic impetus. Player's posts tend to be long and descriptive.

System games are played using a particular set of rules (Dungeons and Dragons is the best known of these, though there are dozens more) which provide a framework for conflict resolution (usually involving dice or some other 'random intermediary)and often a particular 'game world' in which the story takes place. The Game Master (often called Dungeon Master in D&D) is in charge of rules interpretation and the overall storyline and/or world setting. Some systems may be 'rules-light' while others are very structured. The GM may also choose to run a system with more or less rules structure, whatever the system.

Re: Clue me in

You ask: "which 'games' are okay for beginners to go in and maybe not completely ruin."

No player can 'ruin' a game here on Rpol, because each game is in the complete control of its GM. The GM decides which players to allow into the game, (often) establishes rules of conduct, and can remove any player from the game for any reason at all. There is no appeal of the GM's decision. She or he also determines how to enforce or interpret the rules in a system game.

The 'Players-Wanted' forum is where GMs advertise their games when they are seeking players. Interested people submit a Request to Join (RTJ) based on the requirements described by the GM to request admittance as a player. Be honest about your lack of experience and a GM will eventually accept you and help you get your feet wet.

I hope you have a lot of fun here. A lot of people have for a lot of years.

Re: Clue me in

Okay, this helped tons, thanks.

Another question would be: my first post here literally god modded so I kinda need to know how clean does my language have to be? Does it help if I censored myself like with **** or is that not good enough? I'm kinda a potty mouth(typer?) by nature so I need to know how far to cut my language.

Re: Clue me in

You need to cut your language all the way.  Profanity is not permitted in any of the public forums, and replacing all or part of a word with "****" is not the same thing as not using that word.

RPoL has a tradition of replacing profanity with fruits or pastries, and that is okay within reason.
