Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

Hi, And thank you in advance for your help with this matter. I have finally decided that I want to donate in support of this lovely site: problem, I have heard dozen's of horror stories about using Pay-Pal and do not trust that site to handle my payment safely. I also do not trust international mail and so forth to get a payment in to the appropriate people, and even if I did you currently have no address to mail the payment too. This leave's me wondering if there is any way to pay directly via credit card? I want to support the site, even if my contribution is small potatoes, but the current options leave much to be desired...

Thanks again:
~ A Y-M

Several banks now offer the ability to email (via a bank-sponsored third-party) payments.  I've used it safely dozens of times.  But it does require the recipient have an email address and access to online banking somewhere.

I've used paypal for over a decade without the slightest problem -- but I'm afraid that if you don't wish to use paypal there are no other options at this time -- and likely will not be until subscriptions are established.

Same here with using paypal. In fact, I prefer using it over a plain credit card.

The only thing I can add besides humor is finding somebody you trust that does have paypal, give them the money, and then have them donate on your behalf.

No word as yet.  As soon as the details are finalised, there will be an announcement to that effect in all the appropriate public forums, (ie: General RPoL, RPoL Announcements, Community Chat).

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

As far as PayPal goes, if you keep your account details secured (for instance, don't reuse passwords on multiple sites, don't log in on a public computer) and only deal with merchants you trust, you should be safe.  I've used Paypal for ten years now and I've never had any trouble with it.

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

Likewise, I've also used Paypal for around 10 years and I've never had any problem with it other than in relation to Ebay. Someone I sold something to on Ebay claimed they didn't receive it and Paypal took the money back out of my account (so I ended up losing the money and the item I posted).

But in terms of paying for things? No problem at all.

+1 to the above.  I use it to send money to family members frequently and have had zero issues in the last 10 years.

Spending money with Pay-Pal is fairly safe, though not as safe as a CC.

All the real horror stories I've heard are from the merchant side, Paypal has a tendency to freeze large chunks of funds for dubious reasons.

In reply to IanH (msg # 10):

Pretty much this.

As a payee I've used Pay Pal for years without issue.

But there's enough stories of people getting locked away from their money to make me cringe.  Not sure what % of people have that issue, but it's still enough to keep in mind.

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

I have a paypal credit card and not a linked bank account and it works great. Even if it was linked to a bank account I would keep that account only for online purchases and I would have separate account(s) for my other finances so risk would be minimal. I don't know why you would have a locked account anyway unless you were doing something you shouldn't be. Occasionally (once every so many years) I've had a hold placed on credit card because a purchase that was out of 'the norm' for me. That issue was easily resolved by calling the credit card company and having them release the hold. This occurs because of their fraud detection policy. I don't think I've ever had a hold on my paypal credit card but I suppose it's plausible. I'm not really worried about it though.

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

I'm using Paypal but it's not linked to a credit card and the bank account it is linked to is a tertiary free one that I only keep a few hundred in to keep it open. I've never had any problems with the PayPal service other that the weirdness of transferring funds taking a week or so. You'd think with everything being digital it would be quicker. Guess they need to play with junk bonds or something for the week the money is floating about.

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

The horror stories come from people who store there money using pay pal like a bank or have a pay pall card.... some one gets there pay pall card number and take everything....

aprently there whole card database got stolen

and the avrage prossessing time getting your money back is like 6 months x.x

so it sucks....

but yah.... just don't get a pay pall card or store your money in pay pall and it's fine

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

They just recently reissued paypal cards due to the hacking. I believe in the USA you're only on the hook for like the first $50 anyway if it (a credit card) is stolen and used so not really a big deal. If it really bothers you they always offer fraud protection services for a fee naturally.

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

When Pay Pal is regulated and supervised like a bank I will trust them to the same degree as a bank.  Until then, no - too many problems with them.  There are numerous ways to accept CC payments these days such as Square and presumably others.  Perhaps someday ...

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

Pay Pal is currently the only method for sending donations to the site.  Payment options for subscriptions are currently under consideration, and more information will be available when we have it.

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

Until subscriptions are introduced, Paypal will be the only form of donation we can accept.

As far as I know, jase hasn't ruled anything out -- once he's got it worked out, he will no doubt provide details.

You could always only use pre-paid visas for PayPal. That's always worked for me.

Re: Donating: But I dont trust Pay-Pal as far as I can chuck it?

If you'd like to set up a forum to discuss paypal, please feel free to do so in Community Chat.

I'm going to close out this thread as there IS no system of payment that someone won't have heard bad things about, from cash to bitcoin.  :)
