I so miss trick or treating - I am 53 now and really innappropreate for someone my age to go around asking for treats. (all the kids I used to take trick or treating are grown up to. So I can't use that as an excuse either.)

I honestly don't believe you're ever too old.  I deeply believe you have to be in costume, though.

I do know it annoys too many people if an adult goes trick or treating, though.  You could just dress and up go around to wish your neighbors a happy Halloween, and then if people offer treats - which I bet some would - there you go.

My kids are in their mid-teens, so whether they're too cool for this or not has been a major topic on their minds all week.  Still not sure if they're going to go out or not.

happy Samhain!...rain eliminated  a good  bit of people, had a lot of stuff left over.  My neighbor   gived out Cottoncandy ( they  do  carnival  concessions), so that draws a bunch..but after the first hour, it was  dead.

Happy Halloween !

At least y'all know what night to do your trick or treating on! I was out last night with a friend, cruising for the decorated houses in the home city's annual competition, and saw people out in costume... trick or treating?!? And I was informed it wasn't the first night, because people didn't know when Halloween was....

To shorten the story, suffice to say that the capacity of the public at large to be idiots has once again taken me by surprise. :/

I'm going to ease some of the shock with a detour on my way home to a local home that's made the metro papers and news shows with its holiday display. That should help restore some of my faith in people!

My four year old was Cinderella, and her thirteen year old sister was Fairy Godmother.  Previous years they were Rey & BB-8, jedi & ewok.  Love coordinated costumes, hope it doesn't end.

We're all from Gotham this year.  I did a Riddler variant because I found a great hat for it, my daughter is Scarecrow, and our son was originally basing his costume on Warframe, but the way it turned out decided it was a good Penguin.

...So we kind of accidentally ended up with coordinated costumes.  But doing it on purpose really does open up a whole added dimension, doesn't it?

Cinderella and Fairy Godmother is downright brilliant, though.

Happy Halloween !

I'm 50...and don't have kids...but I've really developed a fondness for being home for trick-or-treaters.  My parents didn't let us go out--they grew up in the Depression and its aftermath, and always had a lot of pride that their families made it through without going on welfare, so they didn't like the thought of us going door-to-door, begging for candy.  Ironically, they had no qualms about giving candy out...

So, my memories of Halloween and trick-or-treat are a little different...but I've really come to appreciate the connectedness within the community, when my neighbors bring their kids over.  I get a kick when I open the door, and kids' eyes go wide as they look past me and see assorted weapons and masks hanging on the wall (most of them are souvenirs of shows I've worked on), and love telling them stories about the stuff.  So I'm a little bummed this year because a miscommunication at work today meant I didn't get home until an hour or so after everyone started going around, and I missed a lot of people.

But I'm at least left with a bowl full of candy that I like.  Learned a long time ago to not buy candy I don't like...because I'm always left with some...and one year, I had butterscotch candies floating around my apartment for three years before I finally got rid of the last ones.

Just a little note. Samhein was on the 25th. It's the last full moon in October. Halloween is the Official day put forth by the Government.

Facemaker, had I known you could have sent me the Butterscotch, I love the stuff. ^-^

It's not always the last full moon in October... some years it occurs in the first week of November.  Britannica says it is celebrated on 01 Nov.

I realize it is a lunar holiday.

They probably look at them as some kind of quaint ritual...

That is, if they even know we're here.  If they're on the far side of the moon, they never see us...

Re: Happy Halloween !

A lady today said she does do halloween because she doesn't want to celebrate the devil, and the devil is about death as is halloween, therefore, halloween is celebrating the devil.

That's what she said. Kinda weird if you ask me.

In reply to DarkLightHitomi (msg # 17):

I've heard that one before...more often, it's just a general "I don't want to celebrate a pagan holiday like that," which makes me laugh since many of our religious holidays have pagan roots.  Personally, I believe that the meaning of the holidays is all about whatever significance you choose to attach to them...for me, Halloween is about easing the facade we present in our every-day life, and about building a stronger sense of community with everyone around us.

Re: Happy Halloween !

yep yep..  I'm not much of a church goer.. when I was  young  I asked too many  questions Priest and Nuns  didn't like to answer.... when I married, my Late  wife's preacher  was struck at the   questions  I asked.. and   as I layed out out the holidays  and  where their roots  came from.

to me?.. the Holidays are meant for  Famlies, and  kids... while others  were   created by Business..Celebrate with the   family  and friends  as you would.... keep ...what ever 'meaning'  in your ehart, but  don't let it spoil a good time.

I don't see what is wrong with celebrating death. Dia de los Muertos is exactly that; in fact, that's today! :) (Feliz DIa de los Muertos!)

Weird lady. Sounds to me like someone has an religiously big fear of death.

Kinda like "it's five o'clock somewhere"?

Any excuse for cosplay!  (No, I don't wear a serafuku in cosplay.  With my body  that would just be wrong on so many wrong levels.  I have the body of a god:  Buddha!
 Well... more like Hotei, actually.)
