Trying to find a fantasy novel

Decades ago, I read a young-adult fantasy novel that I'm trying to locate more information about.

I can't remember very much. There's a boy who comes across a magical gauntlet (maybe found in the crux of a tree after lightning split it?) that can do things like conjure defenses. He winds up allying with an assortment of characters (including someone trying to teach him how to use the gauntlet?) and is being hunted by a ruthless character who has the other gauntlet of the pair and knows how to use it.

In one scene, the main character uses his gauntlet to generate a wall that blocks a spider-like creature conjured by the antagonist using the other gauntlet.

That's about all I can remember from it. I probably read it in the mid- to late-90s. Google searches haven't provided me with anything that far back, and nothing that sounds like what I read.

If you have any idea what book this might be, please let me know. It's not life-or-death, but it would solidify some old memories I have, which would be nice.

It's not old enough but I noticed this series has some elements that match what you said:

The second book is called the Copper Gauntlet and has a picture of a spider on the cover (or a monster that looks like one):

In reply to adrasteia1 (msg # 2):

Thanks anyway.

I should mention that the book took place entirely in a (rather non-descript) fantasy world.

Just a stab here . . . the Kelvin of Rud series, by Piers Anthony?  Maybe?

In reply to SWolfe (msg # 4):

Wow, possibly. I read a lot of Piers Anthony around that same time period and so I'd have thought I'd key into him being one of the authors, but maybe I just didn't make the connection.

I'm having trouble finding any kind of plot summary for it. Everything I find uses approximately the same blurb, and the two Amazon reviews don't provide any definite proof.

Try this (re: what I think is the second book in the series).  The prologue seems to fit . . . .

Trying to find a fantasy novel

In reply to SWolfe (msg # 6):

Nice! I'm thinking this might be it. I didn't recall there being any sequels, or anyway I didn't connect them with the original. I'll follow this line of inquiry.

The books seem to be deeply out of print, but clearly Google has preserved some of them.

Thanks!

I'm able to page through Dragon's Gold here:

Edit: Well, a sample. Not ringing any bells, but that doesn't prove anything.

Can't help with pinning down the book, but wanted to suggest Goodreads as a place to look up books, especially older books. They have rather more than 2 reviews per book in the Kelvin of Rud series, for example.
