So, Picmonkey wants my money...

Ever since Photobucket started to get glitchy and then recently took all our images hostage, I've been using Picmonkey to edit, crop and beautify the many pictures I use for my characters and my games. I edit them there and then upload them to Pinterest to host them.

I just tried to edit a new pic though and have discovered that I can't even save my work without paying for a membership.

So I'm curious what sites other people use because I need a new one. I refuse to $100 annually for something that I've been using for months for free.

I know that a lot of people use Imgur but as far as I know, that only hosts the pics and doesn't allow you to edit them. I need a place like Picmonkey but that doesn't want to rob me blind.

Get an imgur account. It'll let you:
  • Crop, resize, and rotate pictures
  • Draw lines, add text
  • Remove redeye, whiten, smooth out blemishes
  • Enhance pictures (Hi-Def, brightness, color-fix)
  • Apply visual overlays (about two dozen options)
  • Change brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness
  • Apply stickers

It's free, as far as I've seen. I've had an account for about 6 years.

EDIT: I told my wife about your site's shenanigans, and she called the site "Fruitmonkey", so that should tell you her opinion of it.

LOL Yeah, they've been great, until now.

Photobucket can go to hell for what they did but Picmonkey has always been great. I've been using their Collage maker too for ages and while I've always had the option of buying a membership to gain some more advanced functions, using the free version has never been a letdown. Until today when they are saying 'Buy the membership or else'.

I don't play like that. I refuse to be forced into parting with my money.

I didn't know that Imgur allowed you to edit. I've just signed up.

It doesn't have all the functions I need and I will miss being able to do things like adding shadowing or borders but it's better than paying Pickmoney.

If anybody else has any other sites they use, please let me know. For now though, I'll jump on the Imgur bandwagon.

In reply to Enchanted_breeze (msg # 1):

Why use a web service for photo editing when free, open source software for that purpose is available?  You might look at The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Project) or Inkscape (which does vector (.svg) art, but can also do photo manipulation).  There are others out there, but I've used both of these successfully.

I won't lie:  there's a learning curve to these tools, but it's worth it to not be held hostage for your edits.  Inkscape, in particular, has a large base of tutorials and how-tos.

I do know that hosting photos on Google Drive for linking from RPoL is problematic, that it is not straightforward (at least in my experience).

A search (in duckduckgo, my favorite search engine) reveals several free websites which provide the same services, but I have no knowledge.

Me? I'll stick with the tools I've mentioned already, and tell these sites to "get offa my cloud".

Thanks Horus. I gave both those a look and while I like the idea of free software, they are a little too complicated and involved for my needs. Thanks though.

Givr IrfanView a look, it is much simpler and primarliy a viewer, but has some editing capabilities that might be sufficient for your needs.

I wonder if we may have to accept that everyone wants to get their expenses covered and make a profit. The era of free services may have run its course.

This is why I would rather support free and open source projects:  they get my money and I get high quality software that doesn't hold my data hostage.

In re:  the original question:  Have you looked at http://fotoflexer.com/ ?  Demos seem like what you would be looking for.

I will stick with older versions of JASC's Paintshop Pro before Corel bought it out and ruined it.

You can find older versions for the cheap on ebay and the like, and the learning curve is much less steep than Gimp.

I've gotten a few copies ... just in case. :-)

I also fondly remember a graphics program from my Windows days called Neopaint.  It was very simple to use, but easy enough to get fancy with when you wanted to.

Paint.net https://www.getpaint.net/ has some good basic editing capabilities and its easier to use. We switched over to it in work because GIMP wasn't hadling image transparency well. Its free.

There are some sites out there that still have the excellent JASC (not the bloated Corel) older paint shop pro versions. Just use google or duckduckgo.

Yeah, those would not be of interest to me - not a Windows user.

I really liked Photostudio on my old computer. It came free with my printer. Not sure if it's still around.

I LOVE ifranview.  Really simple for editing, and lots of fun filters.  Super small.

GIMP is a bit beyond me.

I know I used to use something between paint and photoshop that was pretty easy, that seemed to come with every scanner I got.  I can't remember the name, and searching is failing me.
Oh there's a photoshop express on the web too, but that requires flash.

I know google had some various paint type stuff...
There's this... google's autodraw That's pretty fun.  Ha! I tried to draw a wolf and it suggested lobsters :)
https://www.autodraw.com/

Google docs/drive also has google draw, and you can load pictures up there and share them.

Glad you found something you like using.  GIMP can be a bit much, but can be tamed with some study.

That thing that came with every scanner was probably an early version of Corel Draw.

Good hunting, and happy photo editing!

So, Picmonkey wants my money...

I think all I ever did with Paint as a kid was pick a color and the smallest brush I could find and try to cover the screen. I'd give up about ten minutes in but it never stopped me from trying again the next time I was bored.

Thanks for everybody's help. I'm going to use Imgur. I appreciate all the input.
