Your experience with player evaluations

With something like 600 player posts in the books (not to mention about 500 from me and my NPCs), I figured it was time to ask my players to discuss honestly what they like and don't like about the game and my performance as DM.

Do you have experience with asking players to evaluate you and the game, and can you share with me how that worked out?

Your experience with player evaluations

I've got more than 50 players and 21,000 posts in my top game. I asked my players what they liked and disliked about the game a few thousand posts ago. I got back a ton of answers, and incorporated some of the ideas into the game. It worked really well.

The exact questions I asked were:

1: Are you having fun with this game?

2: What makes this game special to you?

3: What do you like about this game?

4: What do you dislike about this game?

5: Are there any areas you feel this game could improve in?

Remind me to ask you in another thread how you can retain your sanity with 50 simultaneous players in ONE of your games. My seven players have made their 600 or so posts in about a week, so running my one game is like a career.

But on topic, I'm glad that the approach works. I suppose that you do need to have a track record with the players, and them with you, before asking those questions makes sense.

That's a good basic list.  The questions are short and to the point while still allowing an evaluator to go into enough detail to be useful.

Feel free to rMail me if you would like to ask about that. I have no problems answering.

That's why I made the questions like that. I wanted to give people the room to give short answers or long answers. Most of the answers I got back were only a few sentences, but that's more than enough to figure out where to improve the game.
