I have been using PhotoBucket for years. Over the last few years their service has become so full of loading ads as to make the page nearly un-use-able.

Does anyone have a better free service ?

I personally prefer tinypic, but imgur is also pretty popular.

Pixxxels.org is a nice one as well. It actually allows you to have the site itself adjust the size of all pictures you upload to your needs. That was a nice feature that I make use of. And if it is something that you might have a need for, they also allow for adult styled pictures as well. Sometimes something that you might want if you are playing in an adult game or running one.

I know that hosting photos on Google Drive is beyond my meager Google-fu.  I use a hosting service ran by a friend of mine for a Linux community I'm involved with.  He made it super-easy, because his site will auto-generate the HTML or BBCode needed to link to a picture hosted there.  Drop, copy, paste, Done.

I'll third imgur.  It's fairly simple to use and lets you directly link.

Photobucket has just changed so that you can't hotlink without paying a ridiculous amount (AU$400/US$313.24 per year) and is now virtually useless for our purposes.

I've had good experiences with Imgur. They also don't seem to charge anything, but I might have missed the for-pay options.

Just opened a Imgur account. So far it's looking quite good. Certainly a bit easier than photobucket.

In reply to Jaysi (msg # 14):

You need to select the picture itself once you've uploaded it. There will be a list on the right-hand side, with each item having a copyable link you can use in different situations. My best guess is that you should use Direct Link or Forum Link.

The updates to photobucket are a nightmare. I hate to even imagine trying to go and pull anything off my old albums. -_-

I would caution the use of Imgur, as of 2016 they updated their TOS with extensive mention of hotlinking. Seems like under their updated TOS they can shut you down if you're using images on other sites (yes, even images you have uploaded yourself). It's pretty outrageous reasoning. They've banned use of Imgur on various forums, and I'm sure that extends to most sites in general.

Good options, postimages.org and mediafire.com.

I've not seen Imgur banned on any site, myself.

However, any free site is suspect -- or any site, for that matter -- so it's always a good idea to keep your own backups.  If you pay for a site, you might have some limited recourse.

I use Pinterest a lot for easy finding of pics I like, but I think I may even make sure I have a local copy of things I don't want to lose.

I don't trust these free sites, which is why I always host pictures on my own paid for website and domain.  Means that I have full control over my own images.  Don't have to worry about some site changing their ToS and messing everything up.

@Shannara
(I wasn't intending to dismiss your suggestion, I'm sorry if it came off like that?) I never have used Imgur, but know people who did. One of which did lose their account, the other lost their uploads. It's probably just a risk, and I doubt they catch everyone. There had been a lot of discussion about it on a resource site I'm member of, so it came to mind. Seems like the reason is site traffic, and they aren't getting it when users link the images on other sites. They want direct linking to their pages.

Saving stuff (on back-up) is certainly the way to go, and as @BigBadRon said it's safest to self-host. All sites are fickle with updating TOS etc.. it gets crazy. :)

I know a lot of people just want something quick and easy for RP use, which is why I threw in a couple of site suggestions that work well (better than photobucket in any case xD).

Google sites is really good. I use it, and it is much simpler than other free website services.

Of course, it is a website creator rather than simple image hoster, but that just means you can add titles, descriptions, tags, notes, in-game dates, etc underneath thd image and link multiple images together when they are related so players don't have to search through the threads to find your earlier image postings.
