Any good horror PC games you could recommend?

My knowledge of this game began in the winter of 2017 with the reading of a Wikipedia article on the adaptations of the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. I was a fool to investigate further, but investigate I did. And so I came to behold that terrible work, created by an antediluvian game studio that suffered a mysterious and terrible fate. The name of that work is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

I should have turned back at the first sign of the unutterable terrors that this entertainment concealed within, but I pressed on. Through the tenebrous lighting, the unnerving graphics, and the furtive influences of the Shadow Over Innsmouth.

Until I reached the inn.

The indescribable horrors I experienced within were... indescribable. Before I could finish, I instinctively slammed my laptop shut and fled into the frozen night.

But the blasphemous spawn of Headfirst Productions and Bethesda Softworks still survives, within the city of St'eam, for a very reasonable price. What has risen may sink, and what has sunk may rise. A time will come—but I must not and cannot think! Let me pray that, if I do not survive this comment, the admins may put caution before audacity and see that it meets no other eye.

Oh, that was fun to write. Yeah, this seems like the kind of thing you might be looking for. I haven't gotten very far, but from what I know it starts off investigative, and begins to add in FPS elements later. Just make sure you download the fan-made patch so Yog-Sothoth doesn't mess up your save file.

I know this may not have been your focus, but.

Secret World can be tremendous fun IF you try the puzzles and events without simply running to the computer for the answers. It is a MMO through I believe it went free to play. My wife has a lifetime so I'm not sure what it all entails. From the little I have played the beginning is a Cthulhuesk zombie apocalypse, not sure what the rest is like.

Other than that I can say that Alien: Isolation is a wonderful game if you are into Sci-fi

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Dark Corners of the Earth is on my to-buy list, actually :) As for Outlast, I tried it, but I was stuck at one of the action sequences. That's why I'd prefer a purely investigative game... Layers of Fear was a mess, IMHO.

I'll look into the other games mentioned :) Any more suggestions?

BTW. Point-and-click adventure games. Do they make these anymore?

Actually, if you want to go even more retro, I also recommend The Lurking Horror and Anchorhead. Both are old-school text adventure games, and both are pretty damn creepy. I'm not sure about point and click, though.

Since you specify investigation, I don't think you can surpass the Gumshoe system.  Two games come to mind: Esoterrorists and The Trail of Cthulhu.

Outlast was my first thought but I see I've been beaten to it ;).

There is a point-and-click investigative sort of game upcoming soon called Thimbleweed Park. It's by Ron Gilbert (the guy who made Monkey Island) and is in the style of those old point-and-click games from the late 80s/early 90s (like Monkey Island ;)). I backed the Kickstarter and it looks pretty cool. I knew it was out soon but I just checked the website and the date appears to have been confirmed for the 30th March! So only a couple of weeks to go :D. I believe the plot starts with a couple of people investigating a dead body in a river and it goes from there (with multiple playable characters as the game goes on).

Hmm, what else...I think Alien Isolation might count? There's a bit of combat in it but mostly you just want to run and hide because, you know, Xenomorphs aren't exactly known for being pushovers ;).

I'm not really one for horror games myself - other than Thimbleweed Park the games I've named are just ones I've seen played by certain members of the Yogscast on YouTube :D.

Thank you. Thimbleweed Park does seem interesting :)

As for old games: has anyone here played 1995 Sierra game, Phantasmagoria? I know it's been controversial, but is it *good*?

The early-game investigations in TSW are really good.  I found the entire first island (the first three zones) to be really fun and the investigations are mostly possible without resorting to digging up hints on the internet (though most of the big sites have spoiler-tagged their solutions so you can get little hints without ruining the whole thing).

The opposition starts with Deep Ones (who are making zombie foot soldiers), then goes to Egypt with a focus on ancient beings and cultists, then to Transylvania for vampires and werewolves.  Finally, it gets to Tokyo for a bit of everything plus robots.  For my tastes, the first area really is the best.

It is an MMO, but it's intentionally done so that you don't run across other players that often (unless you intentionally group with them).  They're also supposed to have a relaunch in the next few months since the dong-slider for Conan Exiles has made them flush with cash.

Re: Any good horror PC games you could recommend?

Never played Phantasmagoria myself - my parents played it by deemed it likely "too scary" for my sister and me. We did play The 7th Guest (technically more of a puzzle game but with a haunted house as the setting), however, and that did have a few freaky bits in it. Similar story with The 11th Hour (the sequel to T7G), although my dad did let us have a go at a couple of the puzzles that they were stuck on :D.

Re: Any good horror PC games you could recommend?

Two stand out games I've played that have already been mentioned would be Secret World, and the Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

CoC will hit ALL of your requirements. No need for any buts or explanation.

Secret World as mentioned is an MMO... but does not really feel like it. It does have action bars and traditional MMO combat, but there is an entire type of mission dedicated to solving mysteries and riddles. Some the will require you to research on the internet to say, find a reference to an bible verse for a Free Mason/Illuminati themed mission. Which is very satisfying to solve. The game even lets you access to an in-game browser for your character to do said research on to keep you immersed in the world they create. Which by the way has great lore that is still being revealed and is just so fascinating. While not free to play, it does have a single purchase and about 80% of game content can be played with initial purchase. I got my copy during a Steam Sale and it has been worth every dollar.

Regarding CoC:DCotE - I've read that the game is extremely buggy. Does anyone know if the Steam version has been improved to deal with these problems? Not sure I want to play the game that I won't be able to finish due to some bugs...

Re: Any good horror PC games you could recommend?

This subject came up 2 or 3 years ago and I remember someone recommending a game where you take the part of one of three individuals -- woman, man and child -- and run through the game three separate ways.  I can't remember the name of the game but had meant to try it.

Does anyone remember it?  Supposedly it was really creepy, especially running the child character through.  And it is probably similar to what Varsovian is looking for.

I remember now.  The one I was thinking of is called The Path: http://tale-of-tales.com/ThePath/

It was from this thread a couple years ago, which also may have further games that answer the author's inquiries: link to a message in this forum

As I mentioned in the edit to the first post, right now I'm on the lookout for good games, especially recent ones. Any recommendations?

Just to be clear, I mean PC (as in computer) games ;)

I've heard about this game... Might pick it up some day.

Do you guys know anything about Resident Evil: Biohazard or Dishonored 2? Are these games good (no spoilers, please)?

Re: Any good horror (or other) PC games you could recommend?

7th Guest does have a story to it, but it more serves as a framing device for all the various puzzles that the game is built around. You could play it as just a collection of those puzzles (and when you complete the game it unlocks "Open House" mode, which basically lets you do exactly that), but it probably wouldn't look nearly so interesting. Some of the cutscenes are pretty freaky, though...

Seen a bit of gameplay of the Resident Evil game - looks pretty freaky in a Outlast-ish kind of way, going around a spooky house exploring and trying to figure out what went on whilst coming across various scenes of ickiness. At least at first. I've not played it (not for me, thanks!) but seen some playthroughs of the beginning part on Youtube.

Haven't played Dishonoured 2 but I played the first one a bit so if it's anything like its predecessor it's kind of like the Thief series but with magic powers to boost your stealthiness and stuff.

Can't remember if this is the thread where I mentioned Thimbleweed park a few weeks ago but the person I mentioned it to sounded interested - it came out about a week ago (on the 30th) so you can check that out now :).

I will second this. If you're playing with headphones and you want to be scared, it can be pretty terrifying. I got through it by playing it fifteen to twenty minutes at a time because it stressed me out so much.

EDIT: You are pretty much incapable of fighting against any of the enemies in the game. All you can really do is run and hide. The whole game pretty much a big mystery where you're trying to piece together who you are and what role you played in the story.

In reply to Kagekiri (msg # 26):

If you really want an immersive experience, try binding the Pause button to something other than the escape button so that you don't reflex hit it whenever you get scared and panic.  I replayed the game with Pause shifted it over to something on the Numpad, and it was a completely different experience because I could NOT stop what was happening on a whim like I had during my first playthrough.  It's worth noting that there are multiple endings depending on your actions towards the end of the game, so it's worth a couple of replays.
