Can you guess the game?

So I played a game with a buddy a while back.  Its a sci-fi game with tanks mechs space ships and whatnot. It used a grid paper armor system for vehicles and ships. Different weapon types would take out different shapes in the armor. I am looking for the system again and cant find it. I thought it was 'star frontiers' but after a quick look over the rules I am not finding it to be the right system although it may have been a variant because it was very close.

If it helps ill describe the system damage/armor system a bit more. You might have 4 rows of graph paper 12-15 columns wide. The weapons would have differing templates for type and power and you rolled to see which column you hit.

Lasers Rockets Armor piercing
 x x x xxx xxxxx xxx xxxxx
    x x x xxx x xxx
                                  x

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

In reply to billiam (msg # 1):

That sounds a lot like the Renegade Legion games "Interceptor" (for space fighters), "Centurion" (ground battles) and "Leviathan" (large capital ships).

In addition to the templates for armor penetration, it had a complex looking flowchart for damage allocation.

Does this sound like what you are remembering?

I think that Trellian got it right.  Those are the games that I immediately thought of when I read the OP.

Yep, that's Renegade Legion. I recently ran across a document where someone modified the armor and damage rules for use in BattleTech, but the diagrams you show weren't used in it.

Interceptor in particular was very playable and fun.  I thought both the armor and system damage process was very innovative.  Loved the way using the right firing sequence, with some luck you could blow off big chunks of the armor.

I don't remember the exact specifics, but there was also a rule where if you pushed things too hard, you would spend a turn spinning out of control.  We always kept a cassette player with the song "Wipeout" on standby for just that occasion.

Thanks for bringing back those nostalgic memories.  I might just have to blow the dust off and teach my kids how to play over the Christmas holidays.
