Chronomancy

Chronomancy; time magic and that kind of stuff. Does it exist in d&d/etc? I've been thinking on a concept for a chronomancer but can't find any information on what in my opinion is one of the most powerful magical fields, if not on top.

DnD 3.0 has a Chronomancers handbook. It was an interesting read.

There are spells like Time Stop that aren't specified as Chronomancy but would work with the theme.

AD&D 2cd ed has a supplement book on Chronomancy. I got it (somewhere).

Chronomancy

It can't really be any more powerful a field than any other, in a balanced game. There would have to be limitations and downsides that make it only as powerful as any other choice.

I've seen "chronomancy" spells in Dragon magazine, but my preference would be for myself or a player just to reflavor existing spells. Magic missile becomes a needle of accelerated time that drastically ages a point on a target's body. Sleep becomes a spell that can dampen the rate of certain life processes. Fire and cold spells become ways of slowing down and speeding up entropy. Meanwhile, the character is obsessive about time and often gets confused about the order of events and what day it is. He's hale and hearty yet seems oddly out of sorts and often suffering from minor injuries no one saw him incur (all of which reflects both his disjoining from time and his low wizard hit points).

Chronomancy

When I mentioned the power of chronomancy, I didn't mean that being a chronomancer makes you the superior mage from the get-go. I'm just giving my opinion on its potential. I mean, you might be a max level fighter who can cleave down an army alone, but what good is that when the opponent slows time to a standstill? Or accelerates the wither of time on you until you crumble to dust?

Now, I know that kind of stuff probably isn't in d&d (aside from time stop) or atleast isn't as powerful, but I'm just shamelessly glorifying time magic :P

As for the character I'm conceptualizing/brainstorming, they'd probably be involved in a setting that has a lot more... Dimensional disrepair and stuff like that. He'd be more along the lines of "I have to fix this" than "borderline crazy". It's all being brainstormed right now though.

I think in 3.5 Psion powers may be more suited to this than Wizard spells.

In reply to RedTeamPyro (msg # 6):

True, a school of magic that could make a wizard more powerful than a fighter would be darn impressive.

Chronomancy

Time magic has less straight-forward offensive spells and more battlefield manipulation, control, and utility. Despite this, it can still be devastating.
