How does co-GMing work?

How does co-GMing work?

I have at least one, maybe two games which I've done extensive background work on and would generally like to move forward with. This is in addition to a game I currently run which is very demanding of me as the storyteller (and wouldn't be suited to having a co-GM). I would like to be able to find a GM (or two) to share in the vision of the games and have full autonomy as a GM to help run the game.

My only previous experience with a co-GM was with a player I knew IRL who primarily helped me with a rule system I was less than familiar with, who also had a player character in the game, and who wrote death scenes with particular flair for characters who died. Also, in a game my friend was running I helped out by making combat maps.

What I am looking for is advice on how to better run a game with a co-GM who is taking on a nearly equal role, sharing in adjudication, able to post for any NPC's, setting scenes, etc.

What experience do any of you have with co-GMs? What have you found that has worked well? What should be avoided?

Any and all insights are appreciated here. Thank you. :)

So as not to duplicate work or step on each other's actions, I'd carefully delineate responsibilities.

Maybe one GM's job is just to adjudicate mechanics and the other GM handles plot actions.  Or one GM posts for all the NPCs in character.

Whatever you do, fully discuss it so there's no misunderstanding!

In reply to badpenny (msg # 2):

That is exactly why I am hoping to pull from the previous experiences of other GMs that have tried it. I've been outlining plot arcs that give a broad scope of intended direction in the one game. The other game is a wide open sandbox. In either game, I use combat mechanics which other potential GMs will likely want to see in practice before trying to run it themselves, which means I will likely be running the combats at the very least.

A full and ongoing dialog about expectations and the course of the game is something I fully expect to take place.
