The moment when...

Someone tells you to do a thing that you literally just told them you don't know how to do. They didn't tell you how, just to do it.

The moment when...

I think that's called "my job."

The moment when...

That takes me back...

Fort Huachuca, Arizona, early 80's.  That's where the US Army trains intel analysts.

That was their preferred mode of instruction.

Good times.

Then, at my second real civilian job, this was the test the boss would give to every new employee, just to how what they do.

Wing it.    But wing it well.   Think it through, and try to feel what they want out of you. Then wing it.

On the other hand...  if you are in health care or aviation, forget everything I just said.

Perhaps the boss expects you to pester them about how?

At least Id rather be bugged to give instructions then have an employee give me a half ass job.

Then again like Eur512 points out, it could be a test.

Fair enough. This was in relation to a GM. I won't get into where or when, but it was a GM saying it.

The moment when...

In reply to Lord_Johnny (msg # 5):

I would just get snarky and do something really dumb. If I had alot of previous issues like this with a GM and they wasn't being level in PMs I would also delete my character data and kill myself in game. RPOL is for fun, not so "those" GMs can rule a private world.

Bear in mind that while you can mess up your hidden character data, you can not remove yourself from the game, or change the character name.  So one of "those" GMs could just boot you from the game, delete your "I kill myself post", then post as your character in a way that makes you look... less than stellar.

Better to depart the game gracefully than to try to be snarky with somebody who holds all the aces.

Yes, but the GM is also supposed to be here to have fun.

I would like to think without my character data, the version they make would be a shallow imitation. Also all existing players now know the GM is retconning and actually drove a player to IG suicide.

Don't get me wrong, I know the Gms here to have fun. I WANT any GM I'm with to have fun, afterall they're providing the world I'm using for fun! But if they've had me PMing them and just keep giving advise like the OP got I would rather take my IP and get out of dodge.

This is a very good point. I've had plenty of times in real life when I've had to figure stuff out on my own. I don't mind.
On the other hand, when you point out you don't know what you're doing, I do think that some level of aid should be extended to someone who is willing to admit that they're new to (fill in the blank) and don't know what they're doing.

Re: The moment when...

He doesn't need to make a pale imitation, all he needs to do is post as your character - nobody but the GM and you can see the character sheet, so they don't know that it's been deleted.  All they see is that your character loses a fight to a sickly mouse and dies, screaming like a little girl.

Assuming they see your post before the GM makes the adjustment.  Not guaranteed.

Believe me, I've been on this site for about 13 years, and I've seen enough people try to embarrass a GM to know that it usually ends up biting them in the apple.  Would not recommend it to anybody

Worst is when the GM warns all the GMs of games that he's in about a player who tried to wreck his game and had to be removed.  Because they are trying to avoid those players too...

In reply to bigbadron (msg # 10):

Hard seems fair. Screen shots ftw I guess. I just don't like the idea of someone in control of a group of people powertripping and pull stunts like "Just do your job". Off site I'm the leader of a small player group on Warframe, and we quite frequantly help newer players.

I can't imagine just going "Just run the second dream quest, go on" when they ask how to get their last ability, I always go babysit them though it. Lead by example, and all that.

Thanks for the advise though, good points.

Re: The moment when...

Any GM worth his salt will have all the character sheets backed up anyway, just in case of accidental deletions.

However, any GM worth her salt will also help new players to understand the game and its processes.

There are awkward GMs and awkward players. The best games are the ones where the GM and players work together and help one another to make the experience as much fun as it can be.

If you're in a game you don't enjoy, just tell your fellow gamers it's not for you, and leave. Why get stressed over it? It's only a game, there are plenty more.
