Pronounciation

Hey. I have a player in an Egyptian themed game of Pathfinder that has called his character Djhutymose. I've racked google for pronunciation with no joy. I've worked out that Djhutymose is what scholars guess Thutmose II called himself in his own tongue but I haven't gotten any further. Can anyone weigh in on this? For some reason I just gotta know.

Pronounciation

It's not uncommon for multiple languages to have extremely close, if not outright "stolen" name sets.  However, despite this, not every language also has the same capability of sounds.  Take Arabic and English as examples (or Farsi and English) -

There is a character called "khâf".  In English, we'd have an extremely difficult time pulling off the "kh" (it's extremely harsh, in the back of the throat) sound.  So, we'd end-up saying something more like "cough".

Odds are - this is one of the many "Thomas" names that floated around from around 2000 B.C. to 1000 AD.

Didymus
Tumas
Thomas

etc

Tuthmosis is the Greek version of Egyptian "Djehutymose,".  the royal name "tooth-MOE-sis".

The problem with direct translation is that scholars do not know the sounds of ancient Egyptian.  Part of the problem is that the ancient Egyptians did not write weak vowels.

"WEAK VOWEL. In phonetics, a VOWEL that normally occurs only in unstressed syllables. There are two weak vowels in English SCHWA /ə/, as in the unstressed syllables of above and sofa, and short i /ɪ/, as in the unstressed syllables in RP example and Sophie."
