Critical Role

I've been watching the YouTube postings and enjoy the show.  Matt's a great DM.  Players are great at role playing but seem to forget a lot of the rules.

Follow it religiously. The game from 2 weeks ago, episode 43, hilarious.

When I first watched it Matt reminded me of Mercer Frey from Skyrim. They look somewhat alike. I just thought it would be amusing if Matt voiced Mercer Frey.

I checked in on a few episodes, I saw what I thought way too much OOC talk and non game activity.

Now, having read here, I will try again, start from Ep 1

Definitely worth watching even though starting episodes are a bit wonky.  They started filming as they played DnD 5e for the first time, transferring over from PF so there are a lot of mechanics conversations in the first few episodes.

Critical Role

In reply to Deedee_k (msg # 1):

I'm up to episode 20. I don't mind the OOC breaks that bother other folks so much, as they're often funny. And I get the need to have announcements, give out gifts to subscribers, and so forth. It's a business, and that stuff takes up considerably less time than ads on a commercial television program would. If watching on YouTube (as I am), it's also easy enough to skip past it.

I can't decide, though, whether I prefer to watch it on the screen or just listen to the audio. If I watch it on the screen, I get to see the maps and gestures, which are sometimes important. However, the voice work (particularly by Mercer, the DM) becomes far more impressive when you can't see the same face doing it each time. And then, if I'm just doing audio, I can multitask, as I'm doing right now. :-)

I wonder whether there are enough people on RPOL with similar dedication to character immersion, who also enjoy the crunch part as much as the RP part ... sometimes it seems like the community is strictly split between free-form which emphasizes character immersion and RP and the ones who just like to move tokens on a map and roll dice.

I'm new here, but from what I've seen there's really quite a range in between.

Critical Role

In reply to Graham_Scott (msg # 7):

I discovered Critical Role about 3 weeks ago and I'm now up to episode 38.  I think that it's fantastic entertainment, even though several of the players are terrible at remembering rules and adding a couple of simple numbers together.

I've listen to lots of it with no visuals and it works really well for me.  The maps and figures help to some degree but since they switched to an overhead camera looking at the map I'm finding that they're less useful.

For new viewers it's worth watching from episode 1 but if you don't want to do that I've heard suggestions to start a particular plot arc with episode 24 called "The Feast".  That's certainly a very good story line.

Critical Role

I've seen them all so far. Great show, great stories, and a good way to learn the game - both by the rules that come up and the mistakes the players (and DM) make from time to time. Actually, the players are getting better as they go along. Also remember that they played for approx. two years before the show started on the internet, and they were using Pathfinder during that time. They switched to D&D 5e when they went to the show. Matt makes few mistakes anymore, but will post his "Critical" rolls, those which are pivotal to the narrative, online so folks know he's not fudging. Even so, he weaves an amazing story, and the players do an amazing job of acting.

I like listening to the show rather than viewing it just because my time is very limited and I can do other things at the same time.

Highly recommended to watch, even if you pick up in the 40's... Some shows are less story-dense than others, shopping sprees and bar crawls, but even those are made entertaining in my opinion.

I watch it too. Great show.

I'm also watching Shadowrun: Corporate SINs on HyperRPG, another great Twitch show.

Critical Role

In reply to trooper6 (msg # 12):

Is there any way to access that on youtube, or without accessing the twitch-stream?

I've been trying to find a shadowrun equivalent to critical role for a long time.

Edit: That moment when you're up at five in the morning and forget to do a google search BEFORE you ask a question. Thanks for mentioning it! Time to see some peeps run the Shadows. >:3
