Thinking of GMing my first game...nervous

So I had been kicking around an idea for a long time now.  It is a medieval / fantasy based game.  It is a freeform style.

The main story would revolve around a royal family.   Two brothers, a sister, King, Queen, and various other characters all which will be laid out.  The struggle is the coming of age of the middle child, the second son.

I guess I am just nervous to actually commit and put it out there.  Just nervous no one would join it.

So just needed to express myself and maybe get some positive (and negative)  fed back.

I believe freeform will be best for you ,as you will not be tied to rules or settings.

There seems to be a big DnD fan base here, they will be attracted to the fantasy setting, so you should get some takers.

Yeah, freeform seems to have a very solid base here. Personally, I like rule sets, but to each their own. Just make sure you have a solid story, and solid guidelines. Ya know, like no God Modeing, no dictating other peoples' actions, etc. Best of luck.

Just a heads up, if you're looking to see if people are interested in a game like that, then you should post in the GPIA forum. Otherwise, create the game then advertise in Wanted Players.

People on this site join new games every day, and there's a whole host of games to choose from. There's absolutely no reason why they would avoid your game, but even if you get no takers first time around, just revamp your ad and put it out again. Sooner or later you'll get enough players to run. What have you got to lose?

If I can get enough players to run my fringe games, I'm sure you'll have no problems with 'mainstream' Fantasy - you'll probably have to turn some away.

If you're a rookie GM, though, a word of warning from your brief description above - make sure your story isn't just about the second son. I may be teaching my granny to suck eggs here, but...

Players each like to feel that their character is central to the plot. You'll find it much harder to recruit and retain the mature personalities who can handle a supporting role.

You may need a sub-plot for each player with them at its centre. For example, whoever plays the sister might want a Romeo and Juliet love affair with the son of a rival king, a courtier might be scheming to have a knighthood bestowed upon him, a lady in waiting might have her own plans for the second (or first) son's future...

And don't get disheartened by drop outs. It ALWAYS happens. Just recruit replacements quickly and keep running.

Good luck with it. :)

GMs are dong players a favor. Not so much the other way round.

A word of advice.

Don't pick one character to be the protagonist. You don't know what players might apply and what they'll want to play. What if no one wants to play the middle son? What happens if that player disappears a month into the story? What happens if everyone else gets tired of being supporting characters?

I'd advise a more open core. Something about what troubles face the kingdom and how will the royal family and their retainers do to solve it?

You can then give the middle son a particular 'coming of age' arc. Maybe the eldest son's arc is living down a bad reputation. The older sister may be struggling with her marriage to a disappointing noble and attraction to the captain of the guard. The younger daughter doesn't want to be confined in a traditional princess role (like her sister). The king is trying to deal with the main trouble. The queen is dallying with that captain of the guard. The captain of the guard is a foreign spy. The unsatisfactory husband used to be the hero of the realm, but he's disgusted with slaughtering others and sinking into drunkenness.

Stuff like that.

Thank you all for the sage advice.

I love the points you brought up.  Ico, this will be my first game here on Rpol.  But I am still new to the whole GM process.  Thanks any and every thought is welcome.
