What constitutes profanity?

This is a question that has been weirdly weighing on my mind recently. I've been trying to figure out where the line is. I've come up with a few... guidelines, as it were, but the people of RPoL have fairly strong views about this sort of thing in public forums, and represents people from all over the world. As a result, it only seemed natural to bring this question to you guys.

Now, I'm not talking about things that are simply offensive. Obviously, there are any number of derogatory ways to refer to plenty of people or things out there, but where do you draw the line between offensive and outright profane?

I suggest "When in doubt, don't use that language." If you find it hard to know when to be in doubt, consider you're speaking in the presence of an ultra-rich, ancient, ailing, prudish, strict believer relative.

The answer, of course, will vary greatly by origin, probably to the point that why you're asking matters more than what you're asking.  There is profanity in, say, the UK that have no impact in the US, and vice versa.

On the public forums, the best advice is to not draw that line at all.  If it is offensive, then don't post it or figure out a way to post it that is not offensive..  If it is profane, see point 1.

When in doubt, fruit or pastry it out.

RPoL does not have a 'list' of words not to use in public forums.  We ask, and expect, our users to use common sense, which usually takes care of the issue itself.

When it does not, then we provide a polite reminder to perhaps bump up those filters and police themselves a little more closely.

If you're not sure what constitutes profanity, err on the side of caution.

Use fruits. Some of us are too old for these sultanas.
