Seeing in tongues?

Just had an interesting idea, thought I would see if others were using it or not.

I have recently had several parties of maxed races who seem to prefer traveling thru dungeons without any light for the humans.

Seems to me, rather than selecting out who can and cannot see everything, create a 'language' category for those with infravision. Quick and easy, no?

Re: Seeing in tongues?

Probably more elegant to put everyone in a private group who has the same vision types, so those not in the group won't see garbage text.

The best way, from a player's perspective, is going to be doing Secret text.  That way people who can't see get one message about how much they can't see, and everyone else gets another message about what's actually there.

Re: Seeing in tongues?

Can you pre-create a secret group? I didn't think you could do that...

Re: Seeing in tongues?

Well...you can add all the infravision-capable characters to a group (say, for the sake of example, Group 'I'), and then post all the you-can-see-in-the-dark information in that group's threads, which only those characters can see.  You'll still be writing two posts for every description...the main group (Group 0, typically) and the infra-group...but as mentioned, you won't have a lot of gobbledygook cluttering up the main group posts that would give the non-seeing characters clues as to how much is actually in that room that they can't see at all, which will happen if you use a language option for the same purpose.

Or, as mentioned, you can make it one post, but include secret lines to the IR-capable characters.  You'll have to select them each time, but that's pretty straightforward, and if you copy the code from the first message to your notepad/sketchbook/whatever-online-note-taking-option-you-use, after the first time you can just C&P all of that.  Then you only have to post once, the non-seeing characters get nothing to tip your hand about what's actually in the room, and the night-vision/infravision crowd get to see everything you intended, all in one thread so the book-keeping is easier.

Re: Seeing in tongues?

I think I like my idea better... it's all in one thread, I don't need to pick the names each time, and I don't care if the humans can't read a chunk of the text.

Re: Seeing in tongues?

I don't currently run any games/have GM privileges on the main site.  So I can't double check, and it's been a while so I don't remember exactly.  But double checking on the beta site you can set up groups under the GM menu>Edit Private Groups.

So I could be referencing a feature that hasn't been implemented yet based off of half remembrances that aren't correct in the first place. :/

Yes, you can set up Groups for languages (or infravision), here, on the live site, and there are "Secret to Group" and "Private to Group" options.

Re: Seeing in tongues?

I suspect that after seeing enough gibberish text to know there's substantial amounts of information being missed, the humans will become much more proactive about bringing light though.

Re: Seeing in tongues?

If it's sent as a private or secret line, the humans won't see any gibberish text at all.
