WWII - Game System

What would you guys think would be the best game system for a WW2 themed game ? It would center on one American infantry squad, probably following them from mission to mission, beginning with North Africa to Italy and then France.

It would be small squad tactics. The mission objectives might be taking out an anti-tank guns, or observation post, but not using anything larger than a team operated machine gun ... (maybe an occasional bazooka (got to have at least one bazooka).

Sort of a Saving Private Ryan / COMBAT ! / Fury / Rat Patrol flavor.

I am thinking about the system right now. Thoughts ? Thanks

Re: WWII - Game System

GURPS has a WWII setting.  I would lean strongly going with them.

Re: WWII - Game System

How nitpicky do you want to get about game mechanics, tracking wounds, rank advancements, etc?  If you're not too fussed about all the details, the D6 system (originally from West End Games) is a simple, easily adaptable system.  My experience is, generally, the system doesn't matter immensely, unless you're wanting something extremely simple or something extremely realistic.

Re: WWII - Game System

GURPS it has the WW2 3rd Ed books.

TRAVELLER (Mongoose) now has WW2 vehicle books.

Phoenix Command  ultra technical combat system, has WW2 stats I believe.

Re: WWII - Game System

Gear Krieg is a "diesel punk" take on WW2.

One question, which GK also asked itself, is how close to history will you be? For example to all the major battles go the same? GK said yes. Players therefore could understand where things were in the war.

As with any game how detailed on combat do you want to be? More combat detail is very consuming of communication cycles. IMX & IMHO simpler games run better on low bandwidth methods like play-by-post.

Re: WWII - Game System

I haven't gotten to GM it myself, but from the let's plays I've read, The Regiment seems like a cool, fast system. It's a hack of the Apocalypse engine, though, and I feel it might not do a perfect job at explaining the basics. It's a bit hard to judge, though, when I already know the basics.

In reply to Brygun

A system that took care of combat is a simpler easier to run method would be best. PbP games are terrible do to the combat cycles. A system like Beat To Quarters where the whole of the Battle of Trafalgar could be decided over a simple draw of a few cards would be best (well maybe that is too simple but easier would be better).
