Downloading threads

Is there a way to download threads that doesn't use C&P.

I know this came up before, but I can't find the post again. I was thinking I had to do each thread individually, but I don't remember for sure.

I'm hoping to get the [game name removed] before it goes away for good..

Re: Downloading threads

You need to use the D/L link at the right hand side of the header bar in each thread.  That shows you the whole thread as a single page, with options to choose if you want to include private messages, coloured text, etc...  (If you aren't a GM of the game in question, then use the All link to get the whole thread as a single page, but without the options.)

Then you use your browser's File menu to save the page to your computer.

Re: Downloading threads

Okay. Thanks.

Now to see if my phone can save webpages. Any idea the normal size of a thread, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes?

Re: Downloading threads

Okay. My phone browser can save pages as pdfs, but the pages get cut off, showing only the left half of the page. Is there any way to have the rpol pages resize to my screen? (actually, that'd be nice even without downloading pages)

Re: Downloading threads

There should be a setting in your PDF viewer for that - under View or Zoom or somesuch ?  And similar for your browser >

Just did a test - thread with 610 admittedly mostly short posts copied and pasted using browser into a pure text file and it weighed in at 322KB.

Re: Downloading threads

Zooming isn't the issue, I can zoom in and out freely, in both the browser and the pdf viewer, the zoom changes what I see, but doesn't resize the page. Bith are limited in other ways though, likely because I'm on an android rather than a desktop/laptop.

The pdf comes out as a letter sized page which isn't wide enough to display the full width of the webpage. I can't select text that is invisible or anything, when I move the cursor to wrap from one line to the next, it only goes to visible text, so I don't think the pdf is getting any text from the right side of the page. (c&p would be so nice to have)

It seems like I'll have to use a desktop, but who knows when I'll have the chance next.

Re: Downloading threads

Ah, I see what you mean - I think I've come across that before on a desktop - I ended up copying into Word and then saving as PDF from there and that was more successful.

Could you save as HTM or whatever the format is and then open that in Word (will your android run the free Word app ?  will the free Word app open HTM ?)

Sounds like you'd be better of doing the file conversion on the desktop, though - might be too much messing about.

Re: Downloading threads

You might try using a mobile browser that has a "reader" mode on it.  Basically strips out a lot of formatting for use on websites that aren't mobile friendly.

It can be hit or miss, and it might erase the d/l link on rpol.  But if whatever mechanism is doing the saving of the thread is using the way the browser interprets the page to do it, that might be a work around.

I don't have an android phone or tablet so I can't test it myself.  But might be something to try.

Alternatively there are a lot of browser features or apps that are designed around offline web browsing/reading.  Might work for now in case you're worried about losing something before you can access what you're trying to archive on a proper computer.
