Computer Issue...

Computer Issue...

I had a nerve-wrecking BSOD this morning.

I updated my Antivirus program (Avast Antivirus, free version) last night, and rebooted my PC, then decided to update my windows as well. It ended up taking more than 5 minutes and was still on the 'download at 0%' stage, so I cancelled the download, closed my laptop, and went to bed. This morning, the system tray was still trying to download, while the windows update window disagreed and said it wasn't DLing. I told the window to download and then stop DLing, which fixed the disagreement (it was generating weird PC and browser lag) but, shortly thereafter,I BSoD'd.

The comp seems to be running normally after coming back up, and has been for a few hours... I feel like this was a bit of a fluke between  canceling the win update download and putting the laptop into sleep mode...  I'm curious if that's a 'thing' or if anyone has any information.

Re: Computer Issue...

Windows recently has had a conniption in terms of updates.  (Some of it related to the Flash issues.)

So, yes - some people are likely having similar problems.  One of the problems, my father-in-law had was that updates kept attempting, would start to install, then quit and restart the computer.

I found that uninstalling about the last 14 updates helped (starting from the beginning of July-ish.)

Also - if you need free help that works well: finding 'bleeping computer' and consider the program 'Tweaking' - it does wonders.

Re: Computer Issue...

I haven't run windows update since last month. My Firefox and Flash are still on the previous versions (I never run updates immediately, so my browser, win updates, and flash are all on older versions

It's run fine SINCE it came back up, but I'm still nervous.

I'm also nervous about these flash issues I've heard about.

In reply to Flarelord (msg # 3):

*shrug* - just deactivate flash if you're not one to usually use it.  If you're one of those people who can tolerate computers nagging you; you can set firefox to 'ask' if you want to use Flash each time.  That can get annoying though.

Re: Computer Issue...

Flash is dying.

I BSOD'd as well the other day because of Flash. I shut the door on it and then peeked around the corner because there was a funny video I wanted to watch and BAM, it burned me again.

NEVER AGAIN FLASH...NEVER AGAIN!

*chuckle*

That's a good one

Again though, I highly suggest looking at the site bleepingcomputer.com

It has numerous free products - one of which is called 'Tweaking' - a progrm that fixes a lot of baseline issues in Windows (XP, Vista, 7 and 8), to reset broken files and systems back to where they should be.  It nearly lets you repair back to factory standards without having to find your *blueberry* install CD.

Re: Computer Issue...

I hate Windows and I firmly believe Windows hates me.

I had a laptop just last Tuesday do the whole "cannot install updates; undoing changes" that then went into a 27 hour long restart loop.  I hate it.  I couldn't interrupt it to boot in safe mode, because it wouldn't actually allow me to get to the Windows screen. F8 didn't work, nor did any other key combo that ought to have allowed me to interrupt the startup.  It was infuriating, especially when the boss was looking at me like it was my fault.

She was right, it was my fault.  My fault that I didn't get into the system ahead of time and turn of automatic updates.

I find these situations somewhat funny (not to make light of your situation), but, I have become almost convinced that our systems KNOW when we hate them.  For me, all of my Apple-software always dies on me.  I invariably have to reinstall MAC OS X every six months or the whole thing just goes up in smoke.

Windows hates everyone. Everyone. It's like that quiet kid in the corner at school who seems shy but really nice, and then when you look at the doodles in the margins of his (or her) workbook, they're all pictures of the people in the room being brutally murdered. Very well drawn, detailed pictures.

Windows is one of the worst programs out there. The DRM is ridiculous.

My computer issue is that when I go visit a specific person that I know, and I connect to their wifi, I keep getting these port scan attacks. Doesn't happen at my place, just hers.

Re: Computer Issue...

Never had a problem with flash myself, and rarely with windows. Then again, I update only occasionally, and haven't for about two months now.

Re: Computer Issue...

Unfortunately, boss's computer is part of a health care business, and HIPAA and the HITECH Act insist on updates being done, with computers no more than three updates behind, so I have to let updates run.  I just prefer to be at least one update behind, so that if there's a problem the techies will fix it before I actually use it.

Re: Computer Issue...

When I have problems with my windows boxes, I have a Linux boot disc I use to fix them.

Only issue is you can't let Windows know. Windows is very possessive.

Re: Computer Issue...

Yeah I have had issues with them spammimg my laptop with Windows 10 , and that really annoys me. I got the BSOD because of it, and it came up and seems to be working fine, so could be a fluke.

Re: Computer Issue...

If you uninstall windows update KB3035583, it will uninstall the win 10 upgrade program that runs in the system tray.

Re: Computer Issue...

I've had a second BSoD, this morning, minutes ago. The previous one was on Thursday. Again, the PC seems to be running fine now. I am going to try and get all my important stuff backed up as I can.

Flash wasn't running, so I doubt that was it. I did recently update Avast Antivirus's program :/ I hope that isn't the cause.

Re: Computer Issue...

Do you have Windows set up to stop on the blue screen instead of automatically rebooting?

If you do, you can actually look at the error message and the code (known was a STOP codes) which might point you towards a piece of software or hardware that is causing the conflict.

Re: Computer Issue...

I actually don't know how to set that up. Mildly bugged that I can't seem to view the minidumps  or memory.dmp I get 'access is denied'

next time it pops up I'll look for a STOP code

Re: Computer Issue...

I got the following from a support thread over at microsoft;

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

This error message can occur if either of the following conditions exists:
• Your computer has hardware or software problems (hardware failure is the most common cause).
• You try to over clock the speed of your computer's processor (for example, you set a 150 MhZ processor to run at 187 MhZ).

The above STOP error means a trap occurred in kernel mode and the trap is either one the kernel is not allowed to have or is always fatal. The most common causes of a STOP 0x7F are:
• Low-level hardware corruption, such as corrupt memory (RAM)
• Mismatched memory modules
• A malfunctioning motherboard

Sounds bad. Working on backing up all my critical files

Re: Computer Issue...

Any information on your hard drive is retrievable even if the motherboard dies. Just plug it in to a different computer. However, if your motherboard is having problems, you might find any data backups or data that you move may become corrupted.

Therefore I suggest only copying data, or better yet, leave it alone and plug the drive into whatever computer replacement you get or after you get this one fixed.

Re: Computer Issue...

Google is generally your friend.  If you google your laptop model along with your model number I'm sure there's someone who has made a video on how to pull the hard drive out.
