The Word of 2015

Iterative.

Maybe it's just in my profession, but I feel like everyone is now constantly talking about how it's an iterative process. It being whatever.

Has anyone else noticed this is the new buzzword?

Re: The Word of 2015

I had to google the phrase having never heard it before - sounds to me as a pretty cynical point of view if I am interpreting this correctly. Given how cynical I am, that is pretty bad.
I don't think we have gotten that bad yet.

Re: The Word of 2015

To be perfectly honest, I think this is the first time I have seen/heard the word used all year...

Re: The Word of 2015

Really?

This was one of the numerous buzzwords that was beaten into me during my whole career (Army).  Everything is an iterative process.  Learning is iterative.  Math is iterative.  Etc.

I do take your point though; it does seem to be gaining traction and popularity in use alongside any discussion related to Global Climate Change.

Re: The Word of 2015

Learning only has to be iterative if you've not got a good grasp of the subject. While I know it has it's time and place, it is the least likely to produce understanding.

In reply to Piestar (msg # 7):

Apologies: I was meaning to convey the USAGE of the word 'iterative' within the context.  I was not ACTUALLY stating that everything is iterative.  Only how this 'buzzword' was applied.

Re: The Word of 2015

What's amusing is that anyone who played 3rd-edition D&D for any length of time became very familiar with the word, because it was used to describe a game mechanic that applied quite often.

I actually found myself using this word tonight for something I wrote here without realizing it really.

So take that for what it's worth.

Kinda. Yes, I know it's usage in 3.5; but I don't think it's used very often there. In fact, I really had to think about how it's used in 3.5.

Re: The Word of 2015

If you've ever played 'Eve Online' - it's intrinsic to the mechanics of the game.  Everything is 'iterative diminishing returns' this and 'iterative cost of production' that.

Re: The Word of 2015

I used to know that word, but I had forgotten. I actually had to look it when reading this thread. Interestingly, it has a US and a UK pronunciation which are distinctive. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/iterative

Sidenote: If math is iterative, you are doing it wrong. Solve the problem correctly the first time.

Some math is naturally iterative.  Take long division, for example.

Re: The Word of 2015

In reply to chupabob (msg # 14):

Oddly - not necessarily.  There is an equation for example when playing Eve Online:

quote:
Example: base hull has 0% EM shield resist, and you add EM Ward Field (+55% EM resist) modules:

Module 0: 0%
Module 1: (100% - 0%) * 55% * 1.000000000000 = +55% [Total EM Resist = 55%]
Module 2: (100% - 55%) * 55% * 0.869119980800 = +21.51% [Total EM Resist = 76.51%]
Module 3: (100% - 76.51%) * 55% * 0.570583143511= +7.37% [Total EM Resist = 83.88%]
Module 4: (100% - 83.88%) * 55% * 0.282955154023 = +2.51% [Total EM Resist = 86.39%]
Module 5: (100% - 86.39%) * 55% * 0.105992649743 = +0.79% [Total EM Resist = 87.18%]

Is an oft-quoted process (for determining how tough your ships are.)

You're not 'doing it wrong' if you repeat the steps: you're doing it 'iteratively' because you MUST repeat each step for each new instance of damage resistance. =)
