Re: MAD MAX!

I was expecting more Mad Max then what we got. I kind of tilt my head sideways at the world building, but then I guess I am too familiar with the previous works to be impacted by it.

Re: MAD MAX!

So what game system would work the best.  To try and recreate a scenario, similar to the one played out in the movie?

In reply to TheSnowpanther (msg # 9):

d20 Modern might work, as might Shadowrun (with obvious restrictions).  Best bet would probably be to try BESM.

Re: MAD MAX!

A lot of systems could do it to one degree or another.  I would probably go with Savage Worlds.

Atomic Highway was built with this sort of post-apocalyptic vehicle rampages/chases in mind.

Re: MAD MAX!

When I saw the movie I couldn't help but think about Apocalypse World, if you downplay the psychic maelstrom part of the game, or give it a more "collective madness" feel, it's really spot on.

Re: MAD MAX!

I'd use GURPS for its ability to handle mental and physical disadvantages, its point based system allowing non-traditional character concepts, the ability to break limbs or dismember in combat, its systems for vehicle combat and social engineering. I'd probably turn up quite a few of cinematic dials to attain the right feel and boom! Bob's yer Uncle!

Also, thought the film was great. Though...I didn't really think of it as a reboot more of a continuation...in the same way that just because they recast the Bond actor doesn't mean it is a reboot.

Re: MAD MAX!

Just saw it today. Really great. Best action movie I've seen in years, and I think one of the best portrayals of female characters in an action movie I've seen.

If you want to include mutations into the mix, Gamma World (which is part of d20) might work best.  Although I might typically think of GURPS, I wonder if it wouldn't slow things down.  Everything in GURPS is so...deliberate.

In reply to darknash (msg # 19):

To expand on my recommendation : Aftermath! Is very crunchy, with detailed rules for everything from combat to social skills to disease vectors to mutations to damage variations by weapon type. The rules are completely modular and can be played with or without disease or mutations (for instance). There rules for hit location and armor subtracts from damage taken so that each location can be armored independently. Very Mad Max.  It lends itself cry well to a "count your bullets" type of world.

And while the hit table doesn't use the D 30 there are 30 hit locations so if you still have one (for table top)................. And you know you want to keep the disease rules.....

I love that it was a kind of sequel and not a reboot.

Re: MAD MAX!

It was still a reboot, just a fresh take on the story not a repeat of the old one. But even then it still borrowed heavily in the rewriting.

Re: MAD MAX!

Miller actually termed the film a "revisiting".

"Miller claimed that after the first Mad Max film he doesn't really see a continuity or set time frame between the films, although he would think of 'Fury Road' as taking place after Thunderdome. In SXSW, George Miller also claimed that the previous three films exist in no real clear chronology, because they were always conceived as different films."

Re: MAD MAX!

BTW it was my thought that Mad Max was never the main character in any of the movies, but rather a story told through Mad Max's eyes.

Re: MAD MAX!

In reply to Grimjack (msg # 26):

This is absolutely true. All the movies are, more or less, him blundering his way into someone else's story and getting roped along.

The main difference with Fury Road is that he really is a bystander. It's his idea that propels the final act, but other than that it's Furiosa's story. She drives the narrative. She has all the agency. Max just tags along.

Which is awesome.

Even the scene where he takes two shots on the oncoming vehicle, takes a breath and hands the rifle to Furiosa because she's the better shot. It's not treated like it's any big deal. He just does it and they get on with things. But it's a pretty big deal for a mainstream action franchise.

Best movie I've seen in the theater in a long time. Although the others were the Hobbit movies, so my alternatives aren't so hot.

There's a Mad-Max style RPG called atomic highway that's free on drivethrurpg, that might well be the one.
