Nah, anything goes. Its just that text-based formats tend to be slightly unwieldy when doing board games. Seeing the board is kindof important, after all, which make things difficult when you're trying to do, say, Monopoly over a forum. And that's a relatively simple game. When dealing with more complicated games, it would get even more problematic.
I've seen some attempts at card games on RPOL, but to do that you have to write up the entire deck, and roll the dicebot instead of drawing cards, and so on. Lots of work.
