Who plays games here that are not strictly RPG games?

Even though the site name is Role Play Online, the functionality and the play style is great for other games besides strictly RPGs.
Besides, a lot of people "play" a personality when playing games like boardgames so that kinda counts ... right?

Just how common is it to do something a little different here?

Is it frowned on and I missed the memo?

Sure is great for playtesting rule modifications and "take your turn when you can".

Nah, anything goes. Its just that text-based formats tend to be slightly unwieldy when doing board games. Seeing the board is kindof important, after all, which make things difficult when you're trying to do, say, Monopoly over a forum. And that's a relatively simple game. When dealing with more complicated games, it would get even more problematic.

I've seen some attempts at card games on RPOL, but to do that you have to write up the entire deck, and roll the dicebot instead of drawing cards, and so on. Lots of work.

Re: Who plays games here that are not strictly RPG games?

I did a collaborative writing game here once, several years ago, that went pretty well. The rules were basically to take the last ten lines of what the previous person wrote, and write the next chapter without seeing any of the rest of the story up to that point. Then pass the last ten lines of it to the next person. Then assemble the whole thing after several rounds of this to see what the stories looked like. They were surprisingly coherent actually...

It occurs to me that a game like Fiasco would probably also work well here.

There are also "games" here that have puzzles and wordplay, like a thread dedicated to solving riddles or engaging in an "alphabet game" or whatnot.

I have played-in and run-games which are more strategy than "role play", many of the players choose to engage in the roleplay and the 'fluff' of those worlds, but are not inherently required to do so.

Plenty of fun games and interactions here that don't directly involve 'strictly RPG'-ness.

Role Play? Is there anything else that exist here?

Well I'm running one using An Echo Resounding rules that is more like a paper version of "Civilization" than a RPG game.
So I'd have to answer, YES, there is.

Re: Who plays games here that are not strictly RPG games?

Technically any game one is not prescribed to play a different role than our life would normally dictate, could be considered a roleplaying game. Therefore unless we all played our true selves with whatever we did, the game could be considered roleplaying.

I would have to say no, there are no games on the site not requiring us to RP.

Re: Who plays games here that are not strictly RPG games?

There are 'games' here that are essentially a discussion forum, in which you don't play any role, and there are one or more 'games' that exist to identify the avatars in the Portrait Gallery, so there are definitely non-roleplay options.

I've played the board game 'Diplomacy' here, Axis and Allies is another option, so Rpol is quite versatile and is used in many ways. I don't think The Management is bothered what you do provided you're having fun, not detracting from anyone else's fun, and not breaking the law.

Re: Who plays games here that are not strictly RPG games?

A very long time ago, I tried setting up a game of Nomic here. It's a basic set of rules (where the initial goal is rolling a die each turn until your 'score' reaches 100) that's initially pretty dull -- but the rules cover how to add new rules or alter existing ones. Basically, you play the game by changing the rules.

If you've played Fluxx, you have a rough idea.

Problem was, the game broke down when we had people arguing over the definition of a "simple majority" and somehow thinking their concept of it trumped the actual definition. The bickering got pretty nasty there.

Kids these days.
