D&D 5E: Basic Rules Only?

Has anyone tried running a game using only the freely-available, trimmed-down version of the 5th-edition rules? They claim that the two documents (the players' book and the DM's) have enough to run a full game, albeit with limited choices for characters, monsters, and treasure. Has this been tested?

Re: D&D 5E: Basic Rules Only?

I did, and it worked out well enough.

As always, it depends most on the player's disposition, but I had no problems running even complex games.

To make an example: I ran a game with 3 players, all human fighters, but with so different builds and backgrounds, that they were completely different characters.

The rules in this edition are also quite easy to manipulate and adapt, but I didn't need to, and the game went on smoothly. The simplicity of the new rules also makes it very easy to improvise actions and build complex moves.

So yeah, you have enough to run a full game, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: D&D 5E: Basic Rules Only?

It's more old-schoolish than 3E's stuff, but you have a complete game as well.

You can cover different roles with Basic Rules, and you can have your sturdy dwarven wizard with ease.
