Star Wars RP Idea?

I'm not totally positive if this is the correct board for this, so apologies in advance if it's not. This is not a game I intend to run or play in, nor am I proposing someone does, just giving an idea for what I think could be an amusing way to use the system.

So, I've never played any of the Star Wars RPs, but if they are anything like the movies, I'm assuming droids are largely chopped through like butter when they encounter Jedi? If such a system is not already in place, what if there were an option to create a droid PC (assuming for some reason they were made sentient)? Then, if you put them in a situation where they were supposed to fight Jedi and instead tried to escape them, you could have a Dark-Comedy to near survival horror type game of trying to escape basically being squashed like an insect by different things in the Star Wars universe. Again, not trying to run this, just find it to be an amusing idea and thought I would get RPoL's thoughts on it. :)

Re: Star Wars RP Idea?

I'm a huge fan of being a normal guy in an extraordinary world. So I think it might be fun with the force users being godly, and having everyone else just be something else. Droids are TOO normal though, there is no excitement in that. What you would want is a Star Wars game where PCs are NOT Force sensitive. They get thrown into the realm of Star Wars, and if a Sith enters the battle field, it's time to go.

It allows you to really show off the power of The Force. And makes characters have to bend to a very strict rule. So we don't have thirty jedi jumping around, we have troopers and the lesser folk dealing with the incredible power. But still doing important things, like take out an Empire stronghold that has a Sith in it, without allowing the Sith to catch them. They still have the mission, and it needs to be done, but they are no match for the "boss" and it allows battle droids or what have you to actually matter. So even though it's an adventure, but it also raises the stakes, bringing a survival horror idea into it. Because that Sith with wreck you, your party, and your ship before you can take a breath to say "Aw crap!"

Re: Star Wars RP Idea?

It's all about being the "best droid you can be".   The forcefield droids from Phantom Menace can hold off the Jedi, and an intelligent droid with the right weapons can do a lot of damage.

Re: Star Wars RP Idea?

I guess I probably should have specified, the main goal of the game would be staying alive while not being encountered by officials (as they would probably mind wipe a sentient droid who wasn't following orders, even if it was a suicide mission they were being sent on). I think there could be an interesting game in a few droids becoming intergalactic castaways, especially if they accidentally snuck aboard a jedi/sith ship.

Then again, I can see how your vision of the concept could give the hypothetical game a little more structure, since it would be more tied to an overarching goal rather than just survival. :)

Re: Star Wars RP Idea?

In the old WEG Star Wars game (the D6 system), Droids were a regular character archetype players could choose, just like Smugglers or Bounty Hunters or Failed Jedi.  And I had a good time playing one...had a few friends that played them at various stages, as well.

Yes, if you're in a game that's all about hand-to-hand combat, a droid isn't likely to be much of a survivor (unless you're playing IG-88 or some other combat/assassin droid...and I mean a REAL combat droid, not the self-propelled metal targets that they had for the prequels).  But my favorite SW games have always involved a little of everything...so for every scene where the Bounty Hunter stepped out and gunned down a dozen enemies, the Droid had a chance to interface with the computer and save the day in some fashion which nobody else could accomplish.

It takes a little planning and preparation...and a party of players who will adapt to the idea.  But there's no good reason to consider a droid a throw-away concept as a PC.  At least, not in the D6 system.  I never got familiar enough with the D20 rules to know what kind of shortcomings droids have there...our group tried to change over to the D20 rules and it bogged down game-play so much that it effectively killed the game (we only played twice after converting the characters and then nobody had much enthusiasm for playing a third time...which is a shame, after playing the same characters for over a decade.)
