A classic world's passing

I learned recently that the Old World of Warhammer Fantasy games has come to an end. It was literally annihilated in the course of Games Workshop's "End Times" event. The whole setting... it's all gone.

I feel... a little sad about it. I have never played Warhammer Fantasy Battle (although, recently, I allowed myself to get drawn into WH40K), but Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay was one of the first RPGs that appeared in my country - and *the first* foreign RPG published here. Personally, I have never got around to playing it (I was one of the few people that chose to play MERP instead...), but for a time, the game was really big here. I'd say that quite a lot of Polish roleplayers started the hobby with playing WFRP. It's kind of strange to see the setting going away...

How do you feel about it, guys?

BTW. Is it me, or are a lot of popular things endings these days? For instance, in comics, the classic Marvel Universe might get ended soon because of the "Secret Wars" event. And the true DC Universe has actually already ended with the coming of New 52. Also, the Star Trek universe got relaunched (in an inferior form, IMHO)...

Re: A classic world's passing

Well thankfully my book shelves are bulging with my complete set of Warhammer RPG books (second edition of course) so it might have died in the real world but at my table it will go on forever :)

Secret Wars was done before, may be done again later. They go through cycles.

Hm? What happened to NWoD?

But the original Secret Wars wasn't anything like that. It didn't create any continuity revisions etc. From what I know, the new Secret Wars will do just that. It'll be the end of the original MU...

Ah, I did not know. I have not followed MU for over 20 years now with any real interest (beyond the movies).

It strikes me as an act of vandalism.  It's as is GW don't know what to do with their IP so have destroyed it so no-one else can play with it.  Still love (and playing) 1e on here!

They're still supporting and publishing both lines.

nWoD's are all getting Second Editions as well... WtF2e just came out, vast improvements. I heard the vampire one is good too, but I stuck with the V20 in that venue.

Sorry but who gives a procreating strawberry about world of darkness? This thread is about the passing of a legend, sadly one I have only just been introduced too.

I'm sure a lot more people care about World of Darkness than Warhammer Fantasy.  And it's not like Warhammer Fantasy is dead.  GW hasn't gathered up all the books and burned them or something.  Still just as easy to enjoy.  They're even making a Mordheim game right now.

Re: A classic world's passing

According to what I've sniffed out of wargaming forums, Games Workshop decided to dump the old setting because they're gearing up for a brand new (read:very different) version of Warhammer Fantasy Battles. The new edition's rules will not resemble the old rules at all; it will be a skirmish game (a la Privateer Press' Warmachines, perhaps?) while the 8th and earlier editions involved large battles with lots of models on either side. The new edition of the wargame will not be out till July, though, so everybody is waiting with baited breath, and there are all sorts of rumours everywhere. I for one can't separate the wheat from the chaff anymore.
