Too Late to Buy Deadlands: Reloaded?

I was looking for a cool Steampunk RPG and through all my searches I came upon a number of games out of which Deadlands Reloaded stood out to be a really cool choice. I did a little bit of reading and liked the concept of wild Western blend with Weird Steampunk. But I also found out that it is quite old game. One thing I am afraid of old games is that when I buy them and suddenly find that a new edition of that comes out. Recently I got the Savage Worlds Deluxe explorer's book, I am wondering if it is too LATE to buy the game? If you suggest Deadlands reloaded then what books should I buy first? There seems to be a plethora of supplements already.

Re: Too Late to Buy Deadlands: Reloaded?

While Deadlands: Reloaded is an older game, Pinnacle has continually released products for the line. As has been mentioned, probably start with the Marshal's Handbook (Marshal is the Deadlands term for GM) and the Player's Guide. Also, you'll need the Savage Worlds rulebook if you don't already have it.

One advantage of a somewhat older game is that it is well supported and there is a wide variety of material that already exists for it - and they keep putting out more.

In reply to Stalker05 (msg # 1):

Deadlands Reloaded is supported by Savage Worlds Deluxe explorer's book. Just get the Deadlands Reloaded: Marshal's Handbook Explorer's Edition and the Deadlands Reloaded: Player's Guide Explorer's Edition.

Alright! Then apart from the obvious Players guide and Marshal's handbook which other supplements will you advice to buy? I am total newbie for Deadlands and luckily I have the Savage Worlds deluxe explorer's edition rulebook.

Re: Too Late to Buy Deadlands: Reloaded?

Given your mention of Steampunk as being one of the reasons you were interested in the setting, you might check out the "Smith & Robards 1880 Catalog".

You can get a wealth of information on the game setting, adventure ideas, maps, etc from "Trail Guides: Volume I".

Other than that, there's a bunch of smaller adventures and larger plot point campaign books that all provide more information on the world, and some include additional rules and mechanics for use in your game.

Re: Too Late to Buy Deadlands: Reloaded?

I think there is plenty of reasons to buy Reloaded.  It is a great system, there are quite a few players on Rpol which enjoy it and if you want Steampunk I can't really think of a system that is more "geared" toward that without being completely Spaced Aged.

I would second everyone's thoughts, you can't play really without the Marshall and Player's books.  I find the Catalog is worth just having around the house, the fluff is great and the actual steampunk gadgets apply.  The one adventure book I found to be the most useful was the "Flood".  For the great amount of backstory given, NPC's galore and it is an entire campaign in one book.

Plus you get in Deadlands you get Poker Chips! Any game with Poker chips is good in my book;)

Re: Too Late to Buy Deadlands: Reloaded?

Well you only NEED The Player and Marshall books to have a good game of Deadlands: Reloaded. But all the other stuff is plot points, add ons, and other fun thing if you got cash to burn and time to play. One of Savage Worlds biggest selling points to me was that their books are reasonably priced.

Savage Worlds and Steampunk. Consider their Space 1889 reboot

Re: Too Late to Buy Deadlands: Reloaded?

I absolutely don't see a new version of Deadlands coming out anytime soon so feel free to grab it.  I've played it before and it's a pretty good system.  Now the trick is going to be finding people to play it with.
