So a current user poll asking for rpolian's info had me wondering; how much time have you been on rpol?

I'm doing some very rough (and probably wrong) estimations on time per post here. If your average post took you three minutes to compose, how much of your life would that be? For the purposes of this question you can use the number of in-game and general forum posts.

I reckon I'm around 1200 minutes. Roughly 400 posts at the postulated rate. That's a mere 20 hours.

I shudder at the thought of Bigbadron's 14000+ general posts. I can't imagine how many in game and moderator posts that is.

How do your numbers stack up?

It takes me at least twenty minutes per post, sometimes more sometimes less. All depending on how the thoughts flow as I type them.

What is this time of which you speak?

Probably about 5000 hours over 13 years, but that's only for public forum posts, and in-game (current game) posts.  It doesn't include "moderating time" (ie: time spent on rMails, contacting people in their games, checking up on duplicate accounts/underage users in Adult games, etc... ).  It also doesn't include time spent on deleted games (since there is no way to check back on them).

... Well it gets confusing to figure out because I've occasionally taken over old characters; and I haven't counted relatively recent characters.

And as suggested; three minutes per post may not be accurate; but assuming it is, I'm at least 12150 minutes.

Which is I think around about 200 hours. It also doesn't include time I've spent rereading old games; or reading games that I'm joining after they've already begun, and so forth.

Well, let's see.

1268 posts in the general forums at your rate of 3 minutes per post (though I expect I often take more)...

1268postsx3=3792 minutes/60=63.2 hours

But my general forum participation is just the tip of the iceberg, considering the several games I've run and the dozens of games I've played in. In those I generally take much care in the crafting of posts and there have been A LOT of posts over the five or so years I've been on Rpol.

WAG: probably something close to 700 hours in posting.

3 Minutes?  Damn, that's short.  I probably spend anywhere from 10-45 min on my posts (depending on how long my post ends up being and whether it's as a player or GM).  Overall, I've only been on here for 3 years or so, and I check this like I check my email - pretty much every 5 minutes.

Depending on type of post and if it's 'in character' - 'forum' - or 'GM' type I can post in anywhere from 1 minute to 30 minutes. Which can average about 5 to 10 minutes for a post as I tend to go back, read it over then edit it for content and spelling errors.
As to Hours on Rpol, hmm Well this past year about 8 to 10 hours a day (that counts doing something else but keeping a window open here in case someone post on a game I am in / running. - I know I am a Tad compulsive, it's mentioned on my quote after all).

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 hours every two weeks  for five years as an extremely rough average.

At a (very rough) guess, figure about an average of an hour and a half per day, for...oh...about seven years or so, now.

Your formula is flawed because it only counts posts. Trolling the boards counts as time on rPol. (Trolling, ghosting, lurking.Strickly speaking Trolling is something else but has been used for this.)

As a few of you have pointed out, the initial time estimate was off. Or perhaps the question? I suppose I should have asked how much time have you spent posting; using the metrics in the original question.

I know the 3 minutes per post might seem like a low number (and it is most likely off by a considerable amount) but it works for a rough estimate. It looks like the average time spent posting is probably closer to 10 minutes a post.


At any rate it's nice to see at I'm not the only one that spends most of their waking time reading, searching and posting :)

My time estimate was built around the amount of time I average online, and the amount of that which is actually spent on RPOL.  It would be impossible to use my post count to determine time spent here, since for most of my first year on RPOL, I didn't even frequent any of the public threads (I literally started here for JUST ONE GAME...and while it was running, I stayed focused on it).  Likewise, I have no way of counting up the number of posts made in games that are no longer on RPOL (and that's a significant number).

So, I made an educated guess at the average.

Uh.

Uhhhhh.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh...

Lots.  Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots.

I don't even wanna try to calculate it.

At this point I don't think it is measured in hours any more, more like years.
