Game Hosting Forums

Sorry if this sort of impedes on RPOL's turf, and I completely understand if the moderators take it down.

However, I'm looking for some recommendations about forum sites for hosting a game.  In my real-life tabletop game, we're looking at establishing a message board to facilitate action and role-playing between meetings, post campaign notes, and just generally communicate back and forth.  I used to use Aceboards in the past, but that site is down.  I don't need anything that looks too fancy, and ease of use is a big plus since I'm not terribly tech-savvy.  A forum where I can set aside private groups and sections for certain players would also be quite useful.  And I'm not sure there is another site that would have a built-in diceroller, or where I could import some kind of diceroll app or something?

Re: Game Hosting Forums

Um, obvious question, but why not set up this game thingy Here ?
Just have your members make accounts (if they don't already have them), then set up the game you want to run and invite them to it.

As Rpol has all your requirements already.

Re: Game Hosting Forums

Because the game is being run IRL, with weekly table-top meetings.  Last I remember, all games hosted on RPOL must be run on RPOL.  This would just be for additional communication, campaign notes and setting information, and the occasional between-session roleplaying.

Re: Game Hosting Forums

Hmm.... You might be ok to do it here. You should send an rmail to the mods and ask if it specifically violates policy. I had entertained the idea of running a VTT game for combat stuff and doing the IC posts here. It was ok according to Bigbadron.

The difference between our situation might be enough to keep it off of here, but you should ask all the same. There are discussion 'games' that have no game play in them at all. They are roleplaying related obviously but there's no game in them.

In reply to Killer Rabbitt (msg # 3):

I believe that the rule is that the game should be predominantly played on Rpol but additional activities can take place elsewhere, so if it is mainly a forum game that is fine, but just using the forum as an additional support tool you would need to go elsewhere.

Is roll20 any good to you? http://roll20.net

I've not used it myself but it looks pretty good.

In reply to Jarodemo (msg # 5):

That's correct.  The majority of game play should take place on RPoL.

Technically, though, other gaming sites should only be mentioned in Offsite Gaming...  ;)

Re: Game Hosting Forums

I'm not necessarily looking for a gaming site, just any old forum-hosting site that could suffice.  I'm not looking for a virtual tabletop, since we'll already be playing the game itself at weekly meet-ups.

Re: Game Hosting Forums

I think you have to pay for Obsidian Portal's forum features, though. But I've found it useful just for campaign setting info and adventure logs.

Re: Game Hosting Forums

Could try Play By Web - (one word .com) - they are like Rpol but with fewer rules.

Re: Game Hosting Forums

Actually, we'll be revising our rules shortly and the answer will become; use RPoL.

Wanted - Players etc are for games running on RPoL so you can't advertise there (it's actually a game played offsite) so naturally enough if you were trying to recruit players you'd need to post in Offsite Gaming.

Re: Game Hosting Forums

Alright, I was under the impression that I could only use RPOL forums for games that were being run on RPOL, and not use them as, say, supplementary material for a game being run off-site, IRL.

I think that's currently correct - which is why it was the "the answer -will- become"
