Pillars of Eternity(maybe possibly spoilers?)

So this finally dropped last week. Big spiritual successor to the old Baldur's Gate games. Anyone else playing it?

I'm going monk, and playing on easy because I'm a scrub who's bad at micromanagement of a party. Pretty fun so far, even if I'm only a few hours in. Kinda regret not building Resolve or Intelligence in my char a bit more though, those stats seem to come up the most in conversation options.

For those wondering about the maybe spoilers warning in the title, no spoilers in my post here, but they may come up in the thread if there are in fact others playing who want to chat about it~

Playing a monk too and seeing Resolve/Intelligence in conversation but the physical stats/skills helping in specials like climbing things cutscenes. Also, I've found that the monks extra move talent VERY helpful in scouting and pulling monsters away from bigger groups. With the speed boost, you can outrun without much damage. It's a tactic I needed to kill Drake and it's horde of minions.

Hmm. I didn't go for the speed booster skill. Will that come back up as a later choice, or am I stuck with my...whatever I took instead(I think lowering my wound threshold so I build wounds faster)?

In reply to DarkwindStriker (msg # 3):

I think it should remain an option to take later but as I took it as soon as it came up I can't say for sure.

Re: Pillars of Eternity(maybe possibly spoilers?)

I really like it. Went with Barbarian, since that's my standard fantasy game choice. But I've been using hirelings to try out different character types.

The game has sucked me in more than most recent RPGs. Just goes to show you don't need crazy graphics and 3D worlds to have an engrossing fantasy game.

My only complaint is the generic environments so far. I'm almost ten hours in and so far just about every adventure has been in the same old temperate forests and stereotypical ruins.

In reply to Mustard Tiger (msg # 5):

I've seen a beach/water area, so it's not all forest. I don't mind the lack of different environments though as wildly different one a few hours away would seem weird.

Re: Pillars of Eternity(maybe possibly spoilers?)

A beach/water area doesn't really fulfill my desire for more diverse environments. I was hoping for a game with a more unique aesthetic (in the vein of Morrowind) or something that isn't the same old temperate/European-style setting so common to gaming.

Re: Pillars of Eternity(maybe possibly spoilers?)

Aaaaand now I'm hearing stuff about the game being super buggy. Obsidian coding plot, I suppose.

For starters, it seems that doubleclicking an item to equip it can permenantly remove some bonuses from your characters. Or the more you save a game(even over the same save slot) the longer and longer it takes to save and load each time!

Here's the best source for them I found so far.

Re: Pillars of Eternity(maybe possibly spoilers?)

Its been patched once already since release. I'm sure Obsidian are combing through bugs to fix them.

Re: Pillars of Eternity(maybe possibly spoilers?)

Unfortunately... it speaks a lot about the quality of the development and moreso for the executive staff when they are willing to release such a shoddy game.  All the Baldur's Gates were nearly pristine when released.  This game is atrocious.  Many games are released with holes and gaps, and it's just pathetic.  It's one thing to patch a multi-player game for balancing issues (you can never get it perfect), but this is just insane.

Re: Pillars of Eternity(maybe possibly spoilers?)

Huh. Haven't run into any issues so far. About 20 hours or so in, I think.

And I rarely buy games within a week of release anymore. Generally I try to wait a few weeks or even longer until the patches come in. I think it's because developers think they can just rely on quickly released patches to address issues that might otherwise delay the game.

Same here. I've been playing for quite a while, and I've yet to run into anything. It could continue that way, and I could run into a HUGE bug right after I post this. Let's just not pretend that's a problem unique to this developer. With the way development and the industry works now, it's the luck of the draw with basically any recently released game; Obsidian's "lol buggy games!!!" rep is far more memetic than factual at this point. Pillars is a blast and I'm loving every minute of it. The game is quality, period - it does what it sets out to do very, very well.

I agree with Mustard Tiger that more varied environments would've been nice, but the setting is insanely thoughtful and rich in detail, and I actually love the party members that I've met so far. I actually can't see myself going with a custom-made party anytime soon (like I frequently did in Baldur's Gate) because I love the companions way too much. also Cipher is such a cool and fun class y'all
