Re: Terry Pratchett has passed away :(

Yeah; he got alzheimer's in 2007; and apparently finished the last Discworld book last year. From what I recall though, it wasn't the standard alzheimers either - it's a rare version of it; which not much is known about.

And I think it's second most well read British author - slight difference; but quite important.

I think it's time for another rereading of the Discworld series.

Low Key:
:(

The article is vauge, but I hope he went out with dignity, by choice, and with a drink in his hand like he wanted.

Apparently he was in bed with his cat askers on him and his family around him.

A very sad day.

I'm sad to hear this. I hope he passed peacefully. Never read Discworld, but I love Good Omens.

Sad day.  He will be missed.

He was a popular author, but he's not even close to being one of the most well read British Authors.  William Shakespeare, Agatha Christie, J.R.R Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, all jump to mind as being more well read / sold more books than Mr. Pratchett and I'm sure there are more.

THe same is true of Rowling; which is what my comment was in response to.

Though it's Sir Pratchett technically.

His final tweets were, unsurprisingly, heartbreaking. The man could pack more humour and humanity into a footnote than many manage in a book.

In reply to Korentin_Black (msg # 19):

His daughter wrote them on his behalf. She cried as she wrote them, but it was a lovely touch from her. I choked as I read them

BTW, it is Sir Terry or Sir Terry Pratchett or Sir Terry Pratchett OBE, never Sir Pratchett. You've got to love our Honours system!

My most prized possessions are now the books of his that I had signed by him.

The man was the most wonderful sort of character.  RIP Sir Terry.

Ah, jeez. I loved this author. Made me laugh like no one else. Me and the lads will drink one to his memory at the Rusty Bucket.

Re: Terry Pratchett has passed away :(

There is an online petition demanding that Death reinstates Sir Terry immediately. I hope Sir Terry would have found this amusing!

What Pratchett inspired characters have you made? Back in 3.5D&D I made a troll that used a ballista and a club, with a nail in it.

Re: Terry Pratchett has passed away :(

He's a major inspiration for my campaign.  Dwarven Battlebread has made appearances.

He will be greatly missed, especially for all the books that never had a chance to be written, but probably exist in some unexplored far corner of L-Space.  I'm sure they must, the universe would never be properly complete without them.

Sometimes there are no words, and a mournful "Oook" will have to do.

Re: Terry Pratchett has passed away :(

I just realized that his daughter has written or co-written the plot of every video game I have ever enjoyed. His legacy lives on as the apple has fallen so very close to the tree.

That said when I get the chance I'm going to break Death's carpal tunnel ridden arm.

Terry Pratchett is as immortal as any man will ever be. A writer never dies until no one remembers the stories he has told.

Re: Terry Pratchett has passed away :(

An author does not die. they just pass fully into the world that they created. As long as people continue to read and enjoy the well written stories Terry will never be forgotten. We are all blessed by his ability to make us forget our everyday issues when we have a bad day and curl up on the couch/bed to travel into the world that he created for us to live happily.

I think Sir Pratchett would point out that while it is a charming sentiment, it could be potentially problematic for his widow when trying to collect benefits.

There was a reason why he had Death speak with ALL CAPITALS.
