Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

Yeah, but how do the guys at the IMFDB do it?  I swear they can peg a gun from a single blurry background shot and tell whether it had any modifications.

I'll probably go with the Winchester, then.

In reply to Evil Empryss (msg # 4):

Because all it takes is one guy that has that firearm to say "I've got that one!".  The modifications are either easy if they are shelf items, or they talk to the consultant or special effects guys that made the weapon (like the pulse rifle from Aliens) to see how they did it.  Especially when it's something like that, the guy who made it usually is MORE than happy to tell people how they did it.

It's a Remington 870.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

It can't be the Remington. The length of the barrel past the end of the lower section is too long and there's no gap between the pump section like in the picture.

Well, I'll be a son-of-a-blueberry then.  I pulled out my wife's 870 Express - and I'd swear the modification on the barrel is precisely the same.  Then again - my vision may just be going.

Hey, I'm just going by pics on the Internet. If you've got a real one to hold at that angle and see it looks like that, then I will go with your call. :-)

Oh I have no problem taking doubts or criticism - being down to one eye my sense of depth perception is easily off in a lot of things, even if I have one of the objects in my hand.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

I only have one question before I go with it, since the sights actually seem right on the Remington, and please forgive me if I'm not using TU right terminology.  With the one you have, is there a gap between the slide section where you pump it and the barrel itself?  In the photo, you can see the actress is in the process of pumping it and you can see her arm through the gun.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

Yes, there is a gap between the magazine tube (not a consistent term) and the barrel itself.  It's only about half an inch or so.

And, never fear on not knowing terminology - anatomy of guns is so varied; some things are consistent, but not everything.  At least you are better than Diana Feinstein's "the thing that goes up" method of description.

*chuckle*

That being said, to me - it very well could be a different gun altogether.  Just seems like a long-mount variant, but then again as someone stated earlier (pfarland, I believe) there are just soooo many manufacturers.  Heck, the entire thing could be hand-built in a studio.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

Having used the Remington M870 in the Marine Corps (Security Forces and the PI) that was my first guess, I have to agree with Gamer. props department might have modded it a little bit.

Two people who have had the gun in their hands?  I'm good with that.

*cookies to darknash, with a side of fudge for having put up with being in the Corps, especially as security forces!*

Also the Remington 870 has many forms with different lengths around the pump... er area.

Yup that is an 870, guess I should have looked at my own guns before flapping my gums about.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

The opening in the gun is to send a signal to burst a blood pack, for special fx. I learned that much before. Wonder how much boom the need to stimulate a shot  from one?
Must hurt anyway.

Actually I think the opening is because its using an extended magazine, but I could be wrong.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

The opening all depends - could be part of the prop, could be for muzzle control (like .1 flash suppression) - though why you would care on a shotgun is beyond me, or could be for extending the internal magazine tube.  Lots of options there.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

They'd only use the signal device if they were shooting a scene where the gun fires and the target is visible in the same scene.  Otherwise, they don't need it, the blood-pack/squib/whatever is set off by one of the visual effects guys when the camera is ready to shoot it.  It's actually extremely uncommon to see a firearm go off while pointed at a victim in the same frame.  Part of that is a safety issue...having been on the receiving end of a spray of hot gunpowder from a blank, I can tell you, it sucks.  The only thing that would be worse (short of actually getting shot) would be having to endure it repeatedly for multiple takes...if you could get away with it.  I had red spots on the side of my face for half an hour after that incident...

Yeah, powder burns suck.  I had a third degree burn on my elbow from a close range (less than a foot) blank.  30 years later and I still have the scar.

Especially when you might have a repeat of the Brandon Lee incident in The Crow where he was shot with a prop gun that was improperly loaded.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

I was a good twenty yards away from the guy who got me...and we were using crimped blanks, to avoid any risks with the paper wadding (which, if I recall, was what did in both Brandon Lee and John-Erik Hexum).  It wasn't the worst one I ever got...that one happened while filming a promo spot.  The worst one happened during a live show...from about five yards away.

Re: Need Help Identifying a Movie Gun

You really have to be careful with blank rounds they often have more powder in them than a regular shot to make sure they are loud and generate a bit of a flash. The shotgun ( Yep, guess what fired one a few times too :D) it is a handful when loaded with heavy shot, but shoots nicely when using light shot.
