I still think it's stupid that they added Magneto's children when they have the whole separate X-Men movie series going and there's never been any mention of X-Men or mutants in any of the main Marvel movies.

that's because it's owned by a different studio.  Marvel tried to reacquire the rights to them, fantastic 4 as well, but the studios made the new movies to keep the copyrights.

they added in scarlet witch because of Vision, and quicksilver because of scarlet witch.

I don't get why Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have to be in it at all; seems like the movie will be too crowded. That's gonna confuse a lot of non-comic readers, especially since another version of Quicksilver was in Days of Future Past.

you definitely haven't followed the marvel movie announcements then.  Just wait until Avengers 3, that will have about 40 major superheroes in it.

They put them in because Vision is essential to the Ultron plot, Scarlet Witch is married to Vision, and Quicksilver is Scarlet Witch's brother.  So it would be out of place not to include them, if you are following the comics.

and Ultron is a pretty cool bad guy, but I agree it is a very common archetype.  Doesn't mean the movie won't be awesome, though.

But he was one of the first, I think! He was a humankind-hating machine decades before Terminator...

Anyway, he's very cool. One of the better Marvel villains.

and a movie doesn't necessarily need to be wholly original to be entertaining.  and the marvel movies have certainly been more entertaining than most to come out of Hollywood.  For quite a while.

Unfortunately it just seems to me that Ultron will be yet another in the long line of Marvel movie villains that are just "I wanna destroy the world because reasons." The only one that really broke from that mold was Loki.

well, no one said you had to see them.  I think a lot of people are looking forward to them for the exact reasons you seem to dislike.  Myself included.

I think Magneto breaks from that mold as well, as far as Marvel properties are concerned.

And yeah, Magneto breaks from that mold, but I was talking about the Marvel-Disney cinematic line centered around the Avengers.

I think the iron man villains were not very stereotypical in that bend, and neither is Hydra.  But it's a comic book, most things ARE pretty stereotypical.  or archetypical.  That's how they work.

You must've missed Captain America 2? Robert Redford as a villain is awesome. Likewise for James Spader...

Also, the premise of the Avengers as the world's greatest heroes means that they often taken on planetary and cosmic threats... and such threats are rarely subtle. The Avengers haven't had, I think, that many complex villains: Kang is a conqueror, Ultron is a bloodthirsty robot, the various incarnations of Masters of Evil weren't truly subtle, too... And Thanos is, of course, omnicidal.

Of course, the Avengers have faced Dr. Doom, who is one of the most complex villains Marvel has ever had.... but the movies can't use him, because he's part of the FF franchise :(

I liked how Ultron was quoting Pinocchio.  James Spader just makes it sound so intimidating and dark.

Hopefully the movie won't get bogged down by having too many characters.

Putting in Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch is a nice nod to the fans, echoing the first Avengers major roster change when all the big guns resigned leaving Captain America and new recruits Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.  :>

Surprised they had the rights, though after the appearance of Quicksilver in the latest XMen outing (definitely more than just a cameo).
