Is it Late for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Ed?

Hello, I am a little bit confused and facing a dilemma. The Old World setting of Warhammer fantasy roleplay is one of my favorite and I am dying to taste it. But, after the release of 3rd ed and all this tokens and costly box sets I was little bit skeptical. Now, I hear that they are almost out of print. Also, I was browsing through Drivethrurpg and I found out that the 2nd ed line is totally sold as either pdf or PODs, I wonder whether it is still late to get Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd ed? Can you all suggest me what to do? Which ed will be better? Also, I heard the 3rd ed is officially dead(FFG announced that they won't release any new content) and there is no news of any probable 4th ed, so should I go for 2nd ed?

2nd Edition was made by Black Industries and is as good as it gets. I refuse to go for 3rd edition. I'd highly recommend going for it.

In reply to TheBaron (msg # 2):

That's a great help, will order then. Just out of curiosity, is there any good supplements on elves for WFR 2nd ed?

Sadly, Black Industries was brought down before they could delve too deep. You get bits and scraps of Elf Lore here/there, but nothing solid. Sorry, mate. It all depends on what you're looking for what I'd recommend.

Re: Is it Late for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Ed?

"Dead" editions are kind of meaningless - a fun game is a fun game, regardless of whether or not it's still in print.

Whether to get 2nd or 3rd edition is a matter of personal taste.  They're both Warhammer, though they feel a little different in play (I haven't played 3rd enough to be able to adequately describe the differences myself, but they're there).  3rd does have the immediate disadvantage of requiring more fiddly bits per player.  Plus it triggered a lot of unpleasant edition warring, some of which you will see on this site, so I recommend that for gathering information you stick to reviews from people who have actually played a couple times.

If you do decide to go with 2nd ed you could always look for books on Ebay.  I don't know what they're going for over there, but it's worth a try.

Re: Is it Late for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Ed?

I picked up my Amber RPG books on eBay...a friend of mine finished out her collection of the Star Wars D6 rulebooks and sourcebooks that way.  In both cases, the games were long since out of print.

The drawback to eBay is that you can never be sure stuff will be available, but if you're dealing with OOP games, you have that problem anywhere, pretty much.  But there's no such thing as 'too late' for a game...just on RPOL alone, I'm in a Shadowrun game that started out with 4th Ed rules (which are OOP), a D6 Star Wars game (OOP for over a decade, now), and have been in a game that used Dark Conspiracy as a setting and oWoD rules for game mechanics (hybridizing TWO OOP games).  There are a few oWoD games running, I think there are still a few Marvel Super Heroes games (OOP for close to two and a half decades or so), and there's even a few original edition D&D and AD&D games (not to mention the multitude of later, still-OOP edition games).  If it's a game system you enjoy, and you can put together a game ad that piques curiosity, you'll find people that either know and enjoy it, or are intrigued and would be willing to learn it.

Re: Is it Late for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Ed?

I'm playing in two different game of 2nd Edition here on Rpol, right now.  Never got 3rd edition.  Didn't see the need to.  As far as I can tell, it's not a true roleplaying game as it is.  Rather some sort of board game/RPG hybrid that would be near on impossible to play here on Rpol.

Which is where I do all my Table top rules RPGing now a days. (Started back in '76') Because now a days it is near on impossible to  coordinate schedules to play in RL.  An have people show up consistently.  People simply have to many options now a days on how to spend there time.  Thus are rather flaky about showing up for a regularly scheduled weekly game.  Gave up the frustration of trying to do that, about five years ago.

I don't like 3rd edition WFRP. It took all the fun out of making a character, and as TheSnowpanther said its just a board game with slight RPG elements. As far as fiding a group goes, I just try to gather all the jobless single losers and they seem to show up fine. Its those weirdos with jobs and families that are flaky lol.

Any RPG which requires proprietary dice is a no go in my book. I enjoy 2nd edition. 3rd is awful
