Re: Reasons to have a handshake

How much time do you have to do it? How often does your party split up into pairs? Will a high five suffice? What period/culture is the game set in?

I think Xiphoniii has the best idea, though the other players/characters might think it strange if all of a sudden your guy is wanting to make deals and seal them with a handshake. (At least it isn't a kiss, right?)

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Will only handshakes work? What about high fives, fist bumps, pinky promises? Thumb wrestling? What if someone falls and you give them a hand to help them up? Would it seem out of the ordinary for your character to do that huggy-handshake bro maneuver? If another character is sweet on yours, you could hold their hand, walk and talk.

Arm wrestle? Turn it into a contest. It would help if we knew a little of what was currently going on.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

And what's your character like? Many suggestions won't work if it's unusual for your character to touch anyone to begin with.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Historically acurate fantasy setting roughly  in the 13th century. think king auther and his court and its basicly that.

also instructions were handshake. dsindlt ask to for ways to get around it like fistbump.

the character i'm playing was raised by faeries and doesn;t know "human" ways very well. but im not going to make handshaking a thing for the character just for this.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

I think you should slowly become creepier and creepier about how you shake their hand. But don't overdue it. But at least once you should just appear out of the blue and be like "you are my hero sir/ma'am, I would be honored if we shook hands."
Or whenever your group makes a plan of action, you should suggest "we shake on it."

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

How about dancing? With a festive atmosphere and the right music, you could shake the hands of the entire party in five minutes.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

How about a hug?  Guys do that thing where they clasp hands and hold the grip between them while hugging and patting each other on the back with the other hand. You could do that.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Yeah, I heard a comedian describe it as "a man's hug: I'm hugging you, but I'm still hitting you."  The handshake in between keeps manly body parts from getting too close together.  :-p

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

13th century is a bit tough. A kiss might be easier. (Though 13th century is about 500 years beyond Arthur and encompasses the long reign of Henry III and most of Edward I who conquered Wales)

Eggy's idea of a handclasping reel of some sort is inspired, as is standing at the top of a long climb and extending a helping hand to each successive climber.

Declaring after some successful battle or feat "We are a band of brothers!" and insisting on clasping each one's hand could work. Or a suddenly recalled 'custom of my people that all companions clasp hands with each other on the solstice or equinox or St. Swithan's Day or whatever is convenient.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Start early. Your character doesn't know human ways, so you are trying to learn them -- become interested in social customs like bowing, shaking hands, etc.

Periodically after a hard fight, insist on shaking people's hands congratulating them on good jobs.

Although I must say it's a lot easier to shake hands with NPCs ...

Thank ye kindly, Gaffer. ^_^

Kouk has good advice about the NPCs. Shake their hands, too. Be friendly and touchy with everyone so the Players don't catch on.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Hmm. Since the GM is in on it anyway, maybe the handshaking whatsit is contagious?

A friendly NPC shakes your demon's hand when welcoming the heroes, and then shakes everyone else's :p

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

A friend of mine (unfortunately, recently deceased) refused to shake hands with friends.  His reasoning?  The whole tradition of handshaking started as a means of demonstrating to a potential enemy that you were unarmed...you presented your sword-hand, empty, and he did the same.

Claiming that as some sort of cultural background would make for perfectly natural reasons for your character (or his demon doppleganger) to shake hands when meeting new people...

(Said friend insisted on hugging people.  Since he was a larger gent with a rather boisterous manner, that could sometimes be as much of a health risk as crossing swords might have been...*grin*)

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Find a reason to be gone for the bulk of a day say... splitting up to gather supplies or something and noting that you may not see them again.

I need to go do X and there's a chance I may be called away by my fae friends.

In case I don't see you again...

adventurer a - youre awesome, blah blah blah - shake hand.
Adventurer b - blah blah blah - shake hand.
adventurer c...

Tick on some extra power by going meta.  Note in OOC that you may have to leave shortly and now would be the time to do it so.. .  well we'll see...

Make a bet, either for cash or just a friendly wager. Once terms agreed then offer your hand to confirm the deal.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

i Like the idea of ahaving a bet. others are helpfull. He let on a little more last night. the cue for when it happens will be he says everything goes dark and then clicks his fingers. so i'm guessing from that we will be in the middle of a dungeon crawl and the torches go out or something like that.

Man, that's going to arouse their suspicions right there. You might ask him to dispense with the finger clicking at least.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Depends on how he does it...if he's describing something, and then says, "And, suddenly, it goes completely black!" and snaps his fingers like he's punctuating the point or demonstrating how sudden the blackness is, I don't think anyone would notice.

Re: Reasons to have a handshake

Very well actually. I got the entire party sort of.

OK the going dark was a little off. Wee were exploring a cave system when the ground gave out beneath us and we fell and lost out torches. Thus it went dark. Turned out we had fallen into a Demon's lair. i was the Demon.

People bumbled around a little i pretended to be heavily injured. and got one player to take my hand to help me up. we then spent time exploring the cave a little. but it was pitch black and nightvision wasn't helping as there was no moon light. i did a deal with another character to give them bat sonar (a magic spell i could actually cast) he shook my hand as part of the deal.

the third character was a little trickier and it wasn't until we realized we were in a demons lair and wanted to leave that we decided to formulate a plan. the third player created a ring around the party which warded demons out (I was already in the ring LOL) and i still hadn't gotten him when the screams of pain from my real character appeared. and after lighting the area they found be. They were suspicious of the real me rather than of demon me, when i asked for help moving over to see him, the third character took my hand helping me up mission achieved.

I then turned into a giant Demon chicken and the ruse was gone. we ran and fast. The GM gave them ech a roll to not become cursed in the morning. one player passed, one said he pointed out he had true faith on his sheet and expended it to avoid the curse.  So only one was cursed for the long haul. the curse was speaking in tongues. He was possessed by a devil which we exorcised next session

It turned out that the caves we were investigating were wherever the thieves cant language was invented. It was a pirate who did a deal with the devil to create the language, the demon we encountered created the deal. So the cursed character could only speak in thieves cant. which to the rest of us appeared as speaking in tongues
