Re: General Lone Wolf chat

That it does, I can confirm to it.

Not checked the new material yet, but I know for a fact that there have been plenty of Lone Wolf games played on this site in these past years - I myself am running one right now, although I'm mostly used an homebrew set of rule which really has few to do with the Moongoose version and more in common with the gamebooks themselves.

I'm not sure if there's any other games up and running here at this time, but it should be easy enough to check - and at least, the fact that over six games where started does means that there should be some sort of audience for that kind of games here on RPOL.

As for the books, I've played them aplenty, and I still think that the first 12 were very good, some more so than others, while the following ones where somewhat lacking, especially from a "difficulty" standpoint. The series as a whole I find wonderful, especially the setting - very compelling. But i think that's a given, I wouldn't be running a game in it otherwise. :)

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

I think in terms of settings, Lone Wolf is possibly one of the best I've seen. It's a vibrant, colourful fantasy setting that captures the chaos of a world at war while still being accessable.

So did I. I just made it through the first book. It's definitely fun.

I love the fact it keeps your action chart from book to book and you can elect to keep exta items at home.

Yeah, I've been killed three times at the same place in book 2 though.  I am most definitely missing something obvious.

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

Project Aon is a wonderful resource for Lone Wolf, but, being Italian, I was ashamed by the Italian editor move of reprinting the old gamebooks, and therefore creating a copyright issue with the Italian page of the project...

But anyway, I'm really excited by how Cubicle 7 is going about the project, and the downloadable charsheet preview looks really promising to me.

It made me itch to play! I loved gamebooks, and they are lots of fun, but they're also constricting, and limited as a medium. This is means they're just that more difficult to create, so kudos to the authors, but also that they often leave you wanting more!

How many times were you confronted with a choice and thought: "but I could solve this another way, too!"

Agree with you on the limitations, but that is the issue with a book over a video game, and definitely compared to just using your imagination. However, they are a good introduction for non-gamers who may find they want more.

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

Of course, that's what I wanted to say.

The limitations of the books were a boon to readers, and roleplayers to be. And it also showed how creativity could win over a medium so culturally stuck.

I must say, I'm surprised the fad has been so short, but maybe it's too personal an opinion.

I was really sad when gamebooks stopped being published, but I suppose their target audience was too limited at the time, and with the advent of smartphones, no major publisher is going to consider them.

But I digress. Lone Wolf has been an unforgettable saga, with all its problems and limits, and has undoubtedly be a great inspiration for many a gamer.

I couldn't agree more. I imagine many a gamer (myself included) started out with either Lone Wolf or Fighting Fantasy.

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

The biggest problem with them was also the biggest advantage - carrying stuff through from book to book. Because if you hadn't played through all the previous books, by the end of the series, you couldn't win through major fights without cheating.

Fighting Fantasy made a comeback; but only, for the most part, reprinting older books.

Yeah, they have also made the transition over to Android/iOS too, the original Sorcery! books have been re-envisioned for the mobile market.

The Lone Wolf Saga app is a good direct port over, and the Blood on the Snow game is quite good too, though I don't really care for the way Lone Wolf himself looks more like Aragorn than a Kai Lord.

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

I was always under the impression that Aragorn was one of the big inspirations for the Kai Lords, myself.

Been playing the Lone Wolf Saga app on my new 'droid(had the same phone for 8 years, was time for an upgrade anyway), and I'm running into a few problems. One player profile I made cleared the first book...and now it won't load at all. Can't get into the second book, can't even restart the first one. I have no idea what's up with that. I'd like to delete it so it's not just there taking up space, but...well, no such option. Which is weird.

Still, made a second one, proceeded to get carp for CS and End rolls(12 and 24, seriously), and am now getting killed repeatedly by the tunnel crawler. I got a 19 CS on that char that is now bugged and won't load, too. So salty.

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

I used to have most of the Lone Wolf books back in the, but they disappeared over time. I've been picking up the new hard backs as I can afford them. Just have the first two right now.

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

So has anyone else got their PDF of the new Lone Wolf Adventure Game?

What do you think, is it an improvement on earlier versions?

In reply to Silverfoxdmt73 (msg # 36):

I have a copy of it. It's much better than the d20 version that was released years ago, but it feels like the next book is mandatory. There's only one class so far (no big surprises there) and the line looks like it will be published in a similar manner to The One Ring, with new classes in each book.

I do like the fact that there is both simple and "advanced" rules in the same book, and the bacground/world martials are excellent (which is also expected for this world).

Overall I like the game, and was happy to have spent the money on it.

Re: General Lone Wolf chat

Yeah, I like what they've done to it too... I think it was always going to start with just Kai Lords and that's fine with me.

I'm looking forward to the Sommerlund book, from what I've seen on Joe Dever's FB posts it looks far more detailed than anything we've seen before.
