Ads are not an option.  Subscriptions, however, will be.

Why are ads not an option, what's the Amazon thing on the front page?

Re: Leaving the site

In reply to Azraile (msg # 14):

The subscriptions aren't supposed to be a requirement, only a requirement for adult games. I think the idea is that when subs are implemented they will provide more certainty about people's age.

But I do have reservations about how it will work. My gf doesn't have a credit card or any online accounts like paypal; I pay for everything. I'm not clear on whether I'd be able to buy her sub on her behalf and whether doing that would affect her access to adult games.

The sad truth is that a lot of games on RPoL are marked 'adult' purely because people aren't sure where the line between Mature and Adult lies. Making it an Adult game means that unless you do something very wrong you won't get into trouble.

And ads are a pain. Amazon and Facebook stalk you, viruses can piggyback ads, they clog up space... I'd rather pay a couple of dollars a month than see RPoL spoiled with adverts.

Re: Leaving the site

In reply to Silverfoxdmt73 (msg # 17):

The Amazon ad is a bit of an experiment.  It does not, in any way, provide enough income to keep this site running, and it doesn't look like it ever could.

One thing that will come out of subscriptions is that payment information can be used to do age checking for Adult access.

In reply to Tileira (msg # 18):

Options on payment are still under discussion.

Re: Leaving the site

I have been on other sights that survive based on donations. They at first were timid only asking for donations versus setting out goals. I think there are two ways to look at this site. If, the site Mods/owners are seeking profit than subscriptions are the only way, but if the site is simply seeking to break even than a donation system that is spoke about and people see how much is needed and what is being donated I think would work. The key is letting people understand that the site will change if we do not maintain a monthly income of X dollars. For age verification there are other programs that can do it.

Re: Leaving the site

In reply to hegemon (msg # 20):

Yes, this has been discussed extensively and RPoL has decided to go with voluntary subscriptions for the site (think of it as a donation, if you like), but with adult access only available to subscribers who we ourselves verify.

Please see the thread in General about that was posted by jase in 2005 (so it's not exactly a surprise to anyone who's been paying even a little bit of attention ;-)):  link to a message in "General RPoL".  (You can also see the last several discussions about it by searching General for the word "subscription": link to "General Search for Subscription" .)

Re: Leaving the site

It is believe mentioned even in the Rpol Adult Game Policy. Something all should read if you are involved in said games.

I guess sadly the thing I know I'm dreading about this all is when my name goes down into the Chamber.

For those that didn't see it elsewhere. Beware of typos. They can seriously mess you up. I learned the hard way. Double...neigh....quadruple check before sending in that age statement. Mess it up....you can loose adult access.

But relax I won't go on youtube(seriously who is that guy) and cry about it. I understand why it happened and I'm just moving on. That is to protect the site. I know that.

Re: Leaving the site

Happy trails, Emma. Hopefully we'll see you elsewhere out there in the RP community. All this is just one more reason I absolutely loathe RPoL's adult policy even if I love the site as a whole, because it creates so much unnecessary drama for zero actual benefit. Good luck.

Re: Leaving the site

My question would be what is the method of verification. I have worked as a Private Eye, and once a person gives permission to verify there is a whole new issue. If, you can only verify age, and any info gained outside of that is protected. Basically, what is the subscribers level of privacy protection to any other information.  I have followed this for awhile. I really do not play in many adult games. I tend to require it for two reasons if a gamer slips accidentally into adult area and I have no desire to play with any one younger than 18.

Re: Leaving the site

I don't despise the adult rules. I in fact support them. I'm still here. I made that decision when I thought of it. In fact just moving in the Mature direction of gaming. Heard of a few others I may join as well.

Now I admit I've seen drama sadly out there associated with this. I say proove how adult you are by understanding and learning and growing from it. All that does by going to youtube or causing a nightmare for the mods is more trouble than is needed. And makes you look more immature than you claim you are.

I just decided to stand by that original post I made. I came here to be with my family. We have mature games we can do that in. Nothing has changed. Not banned from site and pray that would never happen. I'm here to heal(personal matter) and will use the site to do that. Besides been to others and let's just say.....scary.

Main reason I did adult was to avoid those under 18. I prefer other adults. My concern about subscription is based on hackers. Again a personal matter why.

In reply to hegemon (msg # 24):

I'd suggest you address an rMail to the site admin/moderators.  As I said before, much of this has already been covered, extensively, and the threads are still around to read.  But honestly, I wouldn't worry too much until jase says he's actually ready to begin implementing it (remember, the announcement was in 2005, and it's still not happened).

If you would like more conversation on it, please use rMail.

The only way RPoL could operate without the policy would be to have stricter rulings and completely disallow the things which are currently permitted within adult games.

Re: Leaving the site

I wasnt aware there were to many people on here under 18, everyone I know is 23-50.
since alot of younger folks arent a big fan of pbp or anything without top quality graphics to be it always seemed a bit strange the notion of people getting into trouble for being to young.

Re: Leaving the site

In reply to Tileira (msg # 28):

I have no clue how different the formatting is for a site like this as opposed to vBulletin, but in other sites I've played at, asking for age and DoB is part of the registration process, and Adult forums can't be viewed unless given access by an admin.

Again, not sure how differently things work for this type of site. Just saying there are ways.

Re: Leaving the site

This site and vBulletin are not at all like each other.

However, you are right, there are other ways to do age checks.  One of those ways, one of the more reliable ways, involves subscriptions.

Re: Leaving the site

In reply to cruinne (msg # 21):

Only problem with that is for me, I don't have a job, I have no viable income, I stay at my friends house and watch their son for the room and board I have. If Rpol makes us pay for the adult section, I will be forced to leave as most of my games I run are marked adult for adult reasons. I personally know I am of age, and while i do understand your frustrations about people doing things they aren't supposed to, I don't think it fair to force those of us who can't pay out of the adult section even when we are of age just because we can't pay for the access. I play all my group games here and I love it here, I would hate to have to leave because I can't pay the money you require of us.

And the original topic seems to no longer be necessary anyway, so closing this.

Please see cruinne's links above if you would like to discuss subscriptions, adult access, or adult policies.

Thanks.  :)
