Yep, Gotta love the almighty dollar. I'm thinking that soon Thanksgiving will be served at the stores to those waiting to get in rather than around a family table.

It's all ok though, it isn't like it is helping destroy family values or anything...

Having worked in the restaurant industry, I can tell you that working on Thanksgiving is very much a thing.

As in the entire day.

Because we were serving food the entire day, from 8am to 10pm.

SO GLAD to be out of that.

Oh yes. I mean, I haven't worked in a restaurant since the early 90s, but even then I always had to work Thanksgiving (and Christmas Eve, and Easter, &c.).  Really made that $2.01/hour feel worth it, it did. :-)

Spent 15 years as a line cook and never once did I HAVE to work Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter.  I volunteered a Thanksgiving once, but that was my choice.

That probably just means someone else had to do more than their share of holiday work.  Reminds me of when they were going to bring Sunday shopping to Ontario (believe it or not, stores here didn't use to be open seven days a week!).  We had a petition against it in our store, since as a small business, Sunday was our only 'day off' aka day to catch up on paperwork, housework, all the other things we didn't get done in the other days.  One of the employees, an avid shopper, wasn't going to sign until I pointed out that she would have to take her turn working Sundays; even as someone in a small business, she hadn't thought about how people had to work those days for her to exercise her right to shop.

No actually it was because the restaurants I worked in were closed on those holidays.  As for Easter and christmas, they are major religious holidays as because of such I should not have to work them.  If some one else had to work them, oh well, they should be thankful for the hours and the chance to make money.

In reply to tulgurth (msg # 942):

You're lucky - not everyone gets the choice. My restaurant was part of a chain and the chain doesn't close on holidays.  Most of the time, it wasn't a terrible job, but if you refused to work on holidays, you wouldn't get any other hours either if you kept your job at all.  Small towns, though, have limited opportunities.

I was never once "thankful" for the chance to work a holiday (it was always coerced).  No money I made could, for me, make up missing that time with family.

I did consider myself lucky to not have to work holidays and I never worked chains either.  I understand about being in a small town and the amount of oppurtunities.  I live in a town now that has 25,000 people and it is a resort area sorta for a major city.  During the winter time it is dead and the jobs are scarce, especially in the hospitality industry.  Most of the jobs are factory and no way I am doing that.  I will stick to driving a truck and planning my home times around the important holidays.

Me

Sorry guys, between everything I have managed to forget about rpol for quite some time. I have a girlfriend, her kids also live with me, we moved, and on top of that work has been getting more stressful in some ways. Heck 5 days a week right now I just do not have the time for rpol.

To those I have wronged ... Aim for a weak spot lol?

Anyone else get this 'Reserve Free Windows 10' upgrade notification today ?
I did, looked at it's system requirements and it states that my computer and video card are not compatible with the new OS but I should still reserve my free upgrade anyway. (Right, my computer is not compatible, won't Work with this OS but I should install it anyway, what sort of insanity is this ?)

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 2

Oh, they started the rollout advertisements already?

Windows 10 is legitimately "stealth" rolling out to Windows 7 and 8 machines. The last I read about it, they plan to offer a free upgrade to 10 for up to one year from I guess June 1.

I don't know how necessary "reserving" a copy will really be, but it's not unheard of that people upgrade their computers either by boosting it physically with new parts or migrating their existing hard drive [data] to a newer, stronger machine.

It's not about your current machine at all, probably the assumption is most people would be able to run 10 from the start, but they don't want to disqualify you if you decide to upgrade in the near future.

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 2

NBA basketball is roughhouse basketball, which may or may not be OK. However, it leads to overly difficult, inconsistent officiating; and, I believe, allows players on offense to create fouls that are called on defensive players. This seems particularly true during playoff games. As a result, I find these games less enjoyable than I think they should be.

That's been my answer, stopped watching after the Magic-Bird years. It's pretty much a different game these days, and one that doesn't interest me.

Stupid persistent birds - they want to build their nest on the top of the light outside our front door.  And my, can they rebuild fast!  I think we've pulled down 6-8 complete ones, and several times that parts of, since last night!

Can you put something up there that might deter them? Would bad smelling stuff work on birds? Maybe some stickum?

If you've ever heard of 'Bitter Apple Spray' - usually reserved for Dogs and Cats: spraying this in a concentrated area where you don't want the birds to roost can be very effective without being deleterious to their health.

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 2

Check out plastic bird spikes. They're usually hidden in a corner at your hardware stores or order online (you'll get more than you need).

It's like a fantasy "spike trap" you stick on top of flat surfaces, only the spikes are completely visible. They aren't really spikes, they are flexible tines, but it makes it impossible for the birds to actually stand there any more -- so they can't use that space. Common in cities.

Or some decoration like putting a cone on top of the light like a garden gnome's hat.

As a bird owner, the bitter apple spray will work.  However you will need to keep the area sprayed for quite awhile as itmwillmwash away with every rain.

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 2

I've "bird proofed" a number of buildings, at the professional level.
You have a problem.  If they were just roosting, simple.  But nest building means they are committed, they like that spot, and many of the easy solutions, like bird gel and bird spikes can backfire on you and they might find it even easier to build.

What you need to do is prevent them landing at all.

Vertical bird spikes have a chance at this, but if leaves blow in and get caught... the nest has a head start!

If you can:

Using a steel rod, and steel wire (preferably stainless) make a "maypole" of wires above the place you are trying to protect.  Then stretch a piece of bird net over it.

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 2

Thanks for the ideas!  I hope we don't have to resort to Eur512's, this is just by our front door, and that doesn't sound very decorative.  Also I have a feeling they might find netting handy for anchoring the nest.  Someone suggested a mirror, to try and trick them into thinking a bird is already there.  Might try that, but for now I think bitter apple spray.  It shouldn't wash off too quickly, I think one of the reasons they like this spot is that it's sheltered from the storms we've been having.
