Re: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

I watch it on Hulu, but there are other sites if you're outside the US. It's only up to episode 2 on Hulu and I think there will be 26 episodes this season, so you haven't missed much.

Would if I could. I left off on the older series when Sailor... crud the ice one went to college. Was about 14 years ago lol.

I know the theme song almost by heart and I get their names mixed up... Amy maybe?

Re: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

Waiting for Blood Lad, Devil Part-Timer and... Attack on Titan to come out on DVD myself. I used to love anime but recently I haven't been watching much at all. I get a few manga when the few series I like come up though.

I have heard of the new Sailor Moon reboot, but tbh it's not really my kinda show. I think Steins;Gate and Attack on Titan were great. Blood Lad I'd buy as a manga if they weren't chunky more expensive books, like Vinland Saga... They're huge novel sized things.

Re: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

Is it still lots of teenage girls flashing their underwear during change sequences?  Because I work with lots of kids.  If, God forbid, some crazy kid accused me of anything and I had completely innocent but naughty-looking anime, especially if it was on my computer, the court of public opinion would crucify me.

Re: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

I don't think there have been any panty flashes yet, but I'm not 12, so I haven't been looking.

Being not American, I'm limited to watching in SD on Crunchy Roll's website (since I don't have a sub to watch in higher res or on other devices), or on reposts on YouTube, since every other official site is US only.

I've been pretty happy so far, although some of the production values weirds me out. It looks like it's running very close to the manga, which means more plot and less "monster of the week." I like the original series, but I kind of want it to get to the point. A lot of the drawn out monster fights don't really add anything. Plus, Tuxedo Kamen is completely different (for better or worse) from anime to manga, so it's good to have a chance to see that characterization.

Re: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

I think the transformations would be better off without the CGI. That part seems really  forced compared to the rest of the show. If there is CG in the opening theme (that first shot closing in on the five of them on the field of flowers. CGI?) if the transformations matched that, it would be beautiful. As it is now, it seems like an old video game.

And I agree there was an animation quality drop in the second episode. I hope that the quality stays here for the majority of the series and picks up again for the season finale.

That's all I have against the art. It reminds me of Revolutionary Girl Utena and Rose of Versailles so I love it. It fits the music.. The old score went with the comical mood of the old show. I like that the story has been modernized (slightly?) without losing its sweetness. It doesn't have to be gritty to keep the old audience or attract new fans.

I didn't notice any panty shots or magic skirt. The transformation scenes are pretty much the same.

Wait, when you reference those shows. Is this a remake of the old one?

Sailor moon was very tasteful if I remember right, some torn clothes now and then maybe. Idk It was a long time ago, and I still do not care for those types of fan service. Let the story stand for itself. Yes there were short skirts, but I do not remember panty flashes.

Yeah. The CG transformations are pretty awkward. I know that CG makes it easier to animate certain kinds of movements (which is why vehicles are often done this way), but it always does stand out when put against 2D animation.

Re: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

I have a soft spot in my heart for that show because it was on at 6AM when I had to get up to catch the bus for junior high, and it managed to brighten up what was otherwise a crappy chapter of my life. I saw some teasers for it, and was afraid that I would hate it. If it's getting good reviews, then I should give it a shot.

Well, you know I'm watching it, since I'm the one you heard about it from in that other thread. :P

It's a complete reboot of the series, with the stated intention of following the original manga more closely than the first series did.

On the subject of pantyshots, as I always point out to those who haven't seen the show, the Scouts' uniforms are not girl's sailor-style school uniforms, but skirted leotards designed to look like girl's sailor-style school uniforms.

As for the CGI transformation sequence, a lot of people complain about it, but I don't think it's bad, just... very obvious. Sure, they really could have put more effort into it, but in a few ways I actually prefer it over the original animated sequence. It's also an advantage for production costs, since they can easily just  change the skins, textures, and poses for each character instead of having to draw and animate the entire thing again.

Re: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

And for that I thank you, CC. I get that upskirts of the Sailor Scout uniforms aren't really panty shots, but that's what they look like. But there were panty shots and compromising positions on the old show that were usually played for laughs. I didn't think it was anything to fuss over.

Off topic, if Ranma 1/2 was rebooted or updated, I'd watch.

Kinda off topic: I used to be extremely irritated by the panty shots in the Dead or Alive video games. Not out of some moral outrage. I just thought that the choice of undies was boring. I'd imagine that when the ladies weren't fighting, they saved coupons for Value Packs of granny panties and shopped at WalMart.

In reply to Merevel (msg # 15):

I don't know if I'd watch seven seasons. Ranma felt like it went on forever. Most of it was hilarious, but I could have done without the movies and some of those episodes. All of season three, I think? Can't remember right now. I wonder how it would look if it wasn't done in Takahashi's cutesy style and had a look like Samurai Champloo without the bloodiness.

OMG! A Mermaid Saga reboot would be fantastic! It'd be a dark and gory modern day fantasy.

True even some of the manga was facepalmingly tedious to read.
