Horrible Game Ideas

1. WoD - 100% normal humans (through the entire game) Vs Anastagio's Olde Time Lunar Carnival and Midnight Circus.

-iE2.  Any System - Time travel.... lots and lots and lots and lots of time travel.

3. any system - PCs must all have romantic relations with at least two other PCs. Bonus if you don't tell them till chars are created and genders are picked.

4. dnd - Third party races and classes only.

5. Any system - All the PCs have amnesia the GM makes a secret character for each player. Then the players play without the sheet and just guess. "Do I have a sword? Ok, I swing it"

2.  Any System - Time travel.... lots and lots and lots and lots of time travel.

Re: Horrible Game Ideas

I like the idea of normal humans vs The Midnight Circus. It's very Something Wicked This Way Comes. Doesn't have to be a slaughterhouse. It could be a hope spot for the humans. It could be about the creatures remembering their humanity, if they had any to start with. Or anything. A lot of directions.

7. M&M - Everyone's powers are extremely limited and weak, example: "Player X can fly... north only"

8. D&D - Time period is early man, no communication skills have developed.

9. BESM - Modern American Football theme.

10. D&D - A nautical adventure based off the adventures of the movie Life of Pi.

I'm afraid that I love these "bad" ideas too much. I have cultivated poor taste and I enjoy it.

11. World of Darkness Vampire and Mage Crossover based on West Side Story or some kind of Rodgers & Hammerstein musical. I'm picturing street fights and characters breaking into song/players posting in rhyme. Using Disciplines and Spheres to orchestrate regular humans into dance battles.

Wandering NPC mistrals wander about forcing everyone to break in to song and dance routines.

I have run the 'everyone has amnesia' game, though I did let them check their equipment list. Then let them try and work out why they were, why they were there, and such.
(Put a group of people in medieval armor and weapons in catacomb / sewer type setting - did not tell them till the end of the game that they were actually lost under modern NYC and were actually Larpers)

When ever the wraiths need to sleep the shadows take over there bodies and the wraiths play the Psyche. This switches back and forth until the wraiths finish the story, the shadows consume all the players, or the group falls apart and starts fighting IRL or OOCly to the point there is no recovery.

I would love to play any of these except for the D&D ones. Ugh...

I'd especially love to play the time travel ones ;) (I'm actually running a game right now where one NPC lives backwards through time, and another has a time machine he uses to mess with the past to make things more punk-rocky. It's working out very well.)

One game I've wanted to run for so long ...

Pitch it as a high school drama. Run two weeks as a high school drama. Middle of second period, the English Lit professor keels over, an alien bursts out of his stomach, the military puts the school into lock-down and the city is thrown into eldritch horror.

(Unfortunately, I suspect the only person who'd enjoy it would be me as the GM.)

Anything that has tried to copy another game that has been successful, just because they think it will also be successful. Even going as far as copying some of the words from the other game. It just makes the game bad. This goes for any system, unless the game is tweaked in your own way.

Not so much the game itself, rather the need some people have to escape reality that such games don't provide. For them, the game is a terrible idea.

same here. Been in plenty. Only one I hated. Now two though for another reason.

As for replica I think this goes beyond. As someone who has been ripped off on one of my ideas I just say this. You'll never be as good as the original. No matter how hard you try. Same goes for ripping off of characters.

Now games set in same cities and stuff. That just happens not replicating. Or sometimes it may look this way that a person is but it's cause they went to the GM and asked them on it. It does happen folks. In fact the GM sometimes is nice enough to play in your own casuse of it.

31. Games based on bad video games

Video game was bad enough why duplicate it. Not a good one at all. Just sad.

Yeah i get that, i mean all the major cities must have been used plenty and plenty of times but its never nice to have a game completely replicated to another even with words and phrases nicked from it. Of course replicating a similar game is going to happen but like i said doing it just because you'll think its going to be as good isn't necessary. May as well just join that one. I agree having a game idea or game itself complete replicated is quite gutting because of how much time you spend on it.

More or less agreed.  I'm not sure I'd call it the dumbest idea ever, but I have never been able to get excited about slice of life games of any kind.  I get to live real life, why would I want to RP it?  I'm actually semi-amazed at all of the 'real life' games that pop up on here when there are so very, very many other ideas to be explored.  I know some people who I RP with who also like slice of life, so I don't like to generalize, but it does seem like a lot of people who join those games are pretty attention starved.  I mean when half of the profile is just a few giant shots of the character model in a swimsuit or lingerie... XP

Even worse than 'normal' slice of life games in my opinion are games set in/around real life high schools.  I just can't take high school drama seriously.

Re: Horrible Game Ideas

I'm the opposite with likes, after a fashion, I love low fantasy in the stylings of Robert E. Howard's Conan series, but things like LOTR and generic D&D/Pathfinder I am pretty uncaring for. There are so many games here that do that and I tend to pass those by unless they have something really big going for them.

Funnily enough, the likely most boring idea for a d20 game, the adventurers go into a dungeon and descend each level until they reach the big bad ECL 20+ monsters I actually like ^^'

I also play Dungeon World, but thats kinda different as you build the setting around you and as such you can pick and choose ideas.

I'm a little different to the average roleplayer it seems... ^^;

7 vampires?  No no no no. Throw in one char from every setting: a vampire, a fera of some sort, fae, a Mage,a daemon, a risen, a human, a mummy, and a hunter.

This actually sounds like my present game - we got almost all of these (though the fay is an NPC and the 'mummy' is a Dhampyr and we are playing a modified AD&D game)

5. Any system - All the PCs have amnesia the GM makes a secret character for each player. Then the players play without the sheet and just guess.

Have had a ton of fun playing a game like this actually.  We all started with no memories and pretty much blank sheets with the single directive of being in an asylum and wanting to escape.  Good times.

Re: Horrible Game Ideas

I was in a game like that, too. All of our characters had amnesia and we didn't even know our stats - we had to discover them in the course of the game.

I ran a game like this on here.  it died the death of RPOL games from player attrition.  It was interesting, I was really looking forward to the guy with a severe phobia of dogs to come across a dog....

Best part of all was one of the PCs was an employee of the antagonist but never figured that part out.

Re: Horrible Game Ideas

Similarly, when I was a teenager in the 80s, I ran a scifi game where the characters went into a mutation device and came out with randomly rolled mutations  (of which there were many per character, good and bad) that completely changed all their characters physically (and mentally, in some cases).  Oh, to be young again...
