In reply to Varsovian (msg # 43):

same here. Been in plenty. Only one I hated. Now two though for another reason.

As for replica I think this goes beyond. As someone who has been ripped off on one of my ideas I just say this. You'll never be as good as the original. No matter how hard you try. Same goes for ripping off of characters.

Now games set in same cities and stuff. That just happens not replicating. Or sometimes it may look this way that a person is but it's cause they went to the GM and asked them on it. It does happen folks. In fact the GM sometimes is nice enough to play in your own casuse of it.

31. Games based on bad video games

Video game was bad enough why duplicate it. Not a good one at all. Just sad.

Yeah i get that, i mean all the major cities must have been used plenty and plenty of times but its never nice to have a game completely replicated to another even with words and phrases nicked from it. Of course replicating a similar game is going to happen but like i said doing it just because you'll think its going to be as good isn't necessary. May as well just join that one. I agree having a game idea or game itself complete replicated is quite gutting because of how much time you spend on it.

anything similar to real life. play regular people living in an apartment building in Chicago.

(this was actually posted as a game here on rpol, dumbest idea ever)

who is so starved for RL interaction that they choose to role-play it online?

More or less agreed.  I'm not sure I'd call it the dumbest idea ever, but I have never been able to get excited about slice of life games of any kind.  I get to live real life, why would I want to RP it?  I'm actually semi-amazed at all of the 'real life' games that pop up on here when there are so very, very many other ideas to be explored.  I know some people who I RP with who also like slice of life, so I don't like to generalize, but it does seem like a lot of people who join those games are pretty attention starved.  I mean when half of the profile is just a few giant shots of the character model in a swimsuit or lingerie... XP

Even worse than 'normal' slice of life games in my opinion are games set in/around real life high schools.  I just can't take high school drama seriously.

People like the concept behind the game if not the execution.  There for they use it as a launching point to tell a better story.

Re: Horrible Game Ideas

I admit if you can do better do it. But when a bad video game spawns an even worse RP than it's bad. Haven't we been tortured enough. Same for (insert  bad thing here). Whether movie, book, or TV it just is sad. Yes, I think I can write a better script for Showgirls. Would I want that to be a game....no. Horrible, torture fest.

Eh, there are lots of cases where source material can be made better in the fan version.  I've read a whole lot of fanfiction where the source material is terrible, but the fics are good.  Same for games.

In reply to Azraile (msg # 57):

I believe the reference was to Sucker Punch, the movie of a girl in a mental institute who disenfranchises herself into numerous scifi and fantasy action scenes with her inmates, all of which are attractive young women. If memory serves there was a creepy warden that was involved in the girls doing a kind of dance show... That film has the most depressingly bittersweet endings ever though...

Nah, I rmailed him the game I meant, I was on a slightly different page though.

Just saying the game name right now could have people crying spoilers.

Sucker Punch... is kinda a horrible idea going back on-topic... I mean the action scenes would be awesome, the bookmarks of abuse in a mental institution... Much less so... :/

Indeed, I found the movie... kinda dull and boring honestly.

Then again one of my game ideas was where everyone started as gladiators, over through the king. Then find out they were on a tv show and the public thought it was all fake. They end up taking down the studio in charge of it.

I liked it a lot, actually. Saw it in IMAX and it was gorgeous.

The only horrible game ideas I can think of are the boring ones. I throw super-low power'gritty, no magic' fantasy into that...

Re: Horrible Game Ideas

I'm the opposite with likes, after a fashion, I love low fantasy in the stylings of Robert E. Howard's Conan series, but things like LOTR and generic D&D/Pathfinder I am pretty uncaring for. There are so many games here that do that and I tend to pass those by unless they have something really big going for them.

Funnily enough, the likely most boring idea for a d20 game, the adventurers go into a dungeon and descend each level until they reach the big bad ECL 20+ monsters I actually like ^^'

I also play Dungeon World, but thats kinda different as you build the setting around you and as such you can pick and choose ideas.

I'm a little different to the average roleplayer it seems... ^^;

You know, that's actually part of the appeal of the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy series for me. It almost feels like a satirization of d20, and the characters in DF are often referred to as Murder Hoboes on the site.

7 vampires?  No no no no. Throw in one char from every setting: a vampire, a fera of some sort, fae, a Mage,a daemon, a risen, a human, a mummy, and a hunter.

This actually sounds like my present game - we got almost all of these (though the fay is an NPC and the 'mummy' is a Dhampyr and we are playing a modified AD&D game)

Have had a ton of fun playing a game like this actually.  We all started with no memories and pretty much blank sheets with the single directive of being in an asylum and wanting to escape.  Good times.

I was in a game like that, too. All of our characters had amnesia and we didn't even know our stats - we had to discover them in the course of the game.

I ran a game like this on here.  it died the death of RPOL games from player attrition.  It was interesting, I was really looking forward to the guy with a severe phobia of dogs to come across a dog....

Best part of all was one of the PCs was an employee of the antagonist but never figured that part out.

Re: Horrible Game Ideas

Similarly, when I was a teenager in the 80s, I ran a scifi game where the characters went into a mutation device and came out with randomly rolled mutations  (of which there were many per character, good and bad) that completely changed all their characters physically (and mentally, in some cases).  Oh, to be young again...
