http://www.d20srd.org/srd/vari...g/bellCurveRolls.htm

There's the SRD's bit on bell curve rolling, which is the 3d6 method. Of course, the entire game has to use it for it to work, one person rolling on that while other folks are using d20s as normal would be....odd.

  By not playing a crit-dependent build.  ;)

In all seriousness, it would be very difficult to convert d20 to 3d6 due to the HUGE difference in the distribution of results.  You could probably have much better luck using 2d10.  This would still give lower chance of extreme results, but some people might prefer that.  It also allows you to retain the builds that do focus on crits, such as rapier users or whatnot.

Re: Lost d20, how do you use 3d6 system to replace it lol?

No doubt this won't hold up to mathematical scrutiny or elegance, but my first thought would be to roll 3d6, then on a result of '3' or '18' roll another d6.

If you rolled a '3' first, or "Low," the subsequent d6 would be 1-2 = 1, 3-4 = 2, 5-6 = 3 (really '3' this time).

Then if you roll a natural '18', or "High," the subsequent d6 would be 1-2 = 18, 3-4 = 19, 5-6 = 20.

In reply to DarkwindStriker (msg # 3):

Oh wow I really like this bell curve system, Im going to have to try it. I see alot less luck and alot more.... Meaty feel to it, Like my +4 to hit actually means something now because most of the time on a d20, I feel cursed to never roll higher then 7

Roll 1d6, rerolling sixes. This is Roll 1

Roll 2d6, note the results. These are rolls 2 and 3

Use the following tables:

Roll 1
1: + 0
2: + 4
3: + 8
4: +12
5: +16

Roll 2
1-3: + 0
4-6: + 2

Roll 3
1-3: + 1
4-6: + 2

This gives you the exact statistics of a d20.

Example: you get a roll of 11 (on a d20) by rolling 3, (4-6), (1-3): 8 + 2 + 1 = 11.

You do need to reroll sixes on the first die (16.7% chance), but it's simple otherwise (and rerolls are inevitable if you want to get the statistics for a d20). If you want to reduce the odds of rerolling, you can improve the results by using more complex tables (and possibly more dice). If you want to reduce the number of dice and are willing to reroll more often, if can be done with 2d6 (just get 1-4 on the second d6, reroll otherwise, and add it to your Roll 1 result) - though you have a 44.4% chance of needing to reroll.

4d6-4...giving you a range of 0 to 20.

Re: Lost d20, how do you use 3d6 system to replace it lol?

If you have a d10 you can go old school:

  • Roll the d10 for the ones column.
  • Roll a d6; 1-3 accept the d10 as is.
                    4-6 add 10 to the d10 result.

For example, the d10 comes up 6 and the d6 comes up 3 - you get 6.

Conversely, the d10 comes up 6 and the d6 comes up 4 - you get 16.

Obviously, this works with any die: lower half adds nothing, upper half add 10.
