Quotes, Quotes and More Quotes ... The Sequel

He would have finished him off then and there, but pity stayed his hand. "It's a pity I've run out of bullets," he thought as he went back up the tunnel...

Re: Quotes, Quotes and More Quotes ... The Sequel

"Service in the military, for those of you unfortunate enough never to have experienced it firsthand, consists of long periods of of boredom broken by mind-shredding threats to one's life and sanity.  From what I can gather from the old tapes, it's always been like that.  The best soldiers are those who can wake suddenly, react instantly, and aim precisely.

Unfortunately, none of those traits are shared by the military intelligence that controls those soldiers."

Morbo: “All humans are vermin in the eyes of Morbo!”

Morbo: “Kittens give Morbo gas."

Morbo: Morbo wishes these stalwart nomads peace among the Dutch tulips!
Linda: I’m sure those windmills will keep them cool.
Morbo: Windmills do not work that way! [He turns to the camera.] Goodnight!

Re: Quotes, Quotes and More Quotes ... The Sequel

One of the best scenes from the Chris Farley movie "Tommy Boy":

[Tommy is driving the car while Richard drinks a case of beer in the passenger seat. As they pass a billboard a police car pulls out and follows behind them.]

Tommy: "What's wrong with you, Richard? You can't drink in the car. Don't you know we could get busted for that?"
Richard: [sarcastic] "I did not know that. But right now we got a bigger problem."
Tommy: "That is?"
Richard: "Beer's coming back up." [vomits]
Tommy: "Oh Lord!"

[The car swerves, and the police car pulls in closer.]

Police Officer 1: "Here we go." [activates the siren]
Tommy: "Cops! Darnit, Richard, the whole car smells like beer. They're never gonna believe I wasn't drinking. Hold on!"

[Tommy starts swerving the car violently across the road.]

Richard: "What are you doing?!"
Tommy: "I got an idea."
Police Officer 2: "What the hell?"
Tommy: "When I stop the car, run out screaming."
Richard: "No problem."

[Tommy drives off the road into a field.]

Tommy: "Little trick my dad taught me."

[He stops the car, and they both leap out screaming as the police stop behind them.]

Tommy: "Bees! Bees in the car! Bees everywhere! God, they're ripping my flesh off!
Officer 1: "Son, roll around on the ground! Do you hear me? Roll around on the ground!"
Tommy: "Forget that, I'm already starting to swell up!"
Richard: "Save yourself, Tommy! Don't be a hero!"
Officer 1: "Frank, I'm allergic to bees."
Officer 2: "Me too."
Tommy: "They're huge and they're sting crazy!"
Officer 1: "We'll, uh, we'll come back later to check on you!"
Richard: "Save yourselves!"
Tommy: "Your firearms are useless against them!"

[The police quickly get back into the car and speed away.]

Tommy: "Holy shnikees, it worked!"
Richard: "Ugh, I just barfed in an anthill. Cool! Wow, I think they're peached."

― Terry Pratchett, Diggers

“Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.”
― Terry Pratchett, Jingo

“Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.”
― Terry Pratchett, Thief of Time

“It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life.”
― Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent

“If cats looked like frogs we'd realize what nasty, cruel little blueberries they are. Style. That's what people remember.”

― Terry Pratchett

“In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.”
― Terry Pratchett

“Time is a drug. Too much of it kills you.”
― Terry Pratchett, Small Gods

“It's not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren't doing it.”
― Terry Pratchett

“In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.”

― Terry Pratchett

“I'll be more enthusiastic about encouraging thinking outside the box when there's evidence of any thinking going on inside it.”
― Terry Pratchett

“Five exclamation marks, the sure sign of an insane mind.”
― Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man

“No! Please! I'll tell you whatever you want to know!" the man yelled.
"Really?" said Vimes. "What's the orbital velocity of the moon?"
"What?"
"Oh, you'd like something simpler?”
― Terry Pratchett, Night Watch

“If you have enough book space, I don't want to talk to you.”
― Terry Pratchett

“I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world that truly makes living worthwhile?"
Death thought about it.
CATS, he said eventually. CATS ARE NICE.”
― Terry Pratchett, Sourcery

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”

“Real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time.”
― Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

“DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.”

Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates
1. Pillage, then burn.
2. A Sergeant in motion outranks a Lieutenant who doesn’t know what’s going on.
3. An ordnance technician at a dead run outranks everybody.
4. Close air support covereth a multitude of sins.
5. Close air support and friendly fire should be easier to tell apart.
6. If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.
11. Everything is air-droppable at least once.
13. Do unto others.
17: The longer everything goes according to plan, the bigger the impending disaster.
18: If the officers are leading from in front, watch out for an attack from the rear.
20: If you’re not willing to shell your own position, you’re not willing to win.
24. Any sufficiently advance technology is indistinguishable from a big gun.
27. Don’t be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.
29. The enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy. No more. No less.
30. A little trust goes a long way. The less you use, the further you’ll go.
31. Only cheaters prosper.
34. If you’re leaving scorch-marks, you need a bigger gun.
35. That which does not kill you has made a tactical error.
36. When the going gets tough, the tough call for close air support.
37. There is no ‘overkill.’ There is only ‘open fire’ and ‘I need to reload.’

Re: Quotes, Quotes and More Quotes ... The Sequel

My two favourite tear-jerker lines(seriously, no matter my mood, the time of day, the setting, or what, they always reduce me to a lip-quivering crybaby) are both from Doctor Who.

"Labour camps. That's what they called them last time."

--Wilfred Mott, 'Turn Left'

"They leave. Because they should. Or they find someone else. And some of them, some of them....forget me. I suppose in the end, they break my heart."

--The Doctor, 'The Next Doctor'

As for the ones that crack me up, I think top one goes to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine...

"FIND HIM AND KILL HIM!"

--Worf, 'Take Me Out To the Holosuite'

Actually, now that I think about it, everything Worf does is hilarious to me.

Ira Bear (Irene Cobbler): "You know what they say, If it looks like a fox, acts like a fox, and yips like a fox, it's probably a fox."
Fenton Fox (Fenton Cobbler): "It's a duck."

From the book Bait and Switch.
Setup: Toon name (Real name)

Ira's a yellow teddy bear, fenton's, well, a fox anthro, both toons, but I just see Fenton as a normal fox anthro painted in ink-and-paint.

"If God did not exist, Man would have to Create him."  - Unknown *

This quote was posted on the classroom wall of my History teacher, a former Air Force pilot who flew missions during the Korean War.  It always struck me as interesting, since he made sure (be it World History, American History, or Political Science) that his students were aware of the role that 'religion' played for every culture, government, and time period we studied.  Though he never directly referred to the quote or pointed to it on his wall, it definitely made everyone think as they sat down and the lesson began for it being where all could see it as they entered the room.

This is actually a quote from Voltaire, of course, he said it in French which probably made it more painful.
This is also the man who gave us
  • If God has made us in his image, we have returned him the favor.
  • It is better to risk sparing a guilty person than to condemn an innocent one.
  • It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong.
  • It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.

Yet it may be that in some far day the shadows shall fade and the Prince of Darkness be chained forever in his hell. And till then, mankind can but stand up stoutly to the monsters in his own heart and without, and with the aid of God he may yet triumph."

Re: Quotes, Quotes and More Quotes ... The Sequel

"One. Martian society will be composed of many different cultures. It is better to think of it as a world rather than a nation. Freedom of religion and cultural practice must be guaranteed. No one culture or group of cultures should be able to dominate the rest."
"Two. Within this framework of diversity, it still must be guaranteed that all individuals on Mars have certain inalienable rights, including the material basics of existence, health care, education, and legal equality."
"Three. The land, air, and water of Mars are in the common stewardship of the human family, and cannot be owned by any individual or group."
"Four. The fruits of an individual's labour belong to the individual, and cannot be appropriated by another individual or group. At the same time, human labour on Mars is part of a communal enterprise, given to the common good. The Martian economic system must reflect both these facts, balancing self-interest with the interests of society at large."
"Five. The metanational order ruling Earth is currently incapable of incorporating the previous two principles, and cannot be applied here. In its place we must enact an economics based on ecological science. The goal of Martian economics is not 'sustainable development'' but a sustainable prosperity for its entire biosphere."
"Six. The Martian landscape itself has certain 'rights of place' which must be honoured. The goal of our environmental alterations should therefore be minimalist and ecopoetic, reflecting the values of the areophany. It is suggested that the goal of environmental alterations be to make only that portion of Mars lower than the five-kilometer contour human-viable. Higher elevations, constituting some thirty percent of the planet, would then remain in something resembling their primeval conditions, existing as natural wilderness zones."
"Seven. The habitation of Mars is a unique historical process, as it is the first inhabitation of another planet by humanity. As such it should be undertaken in the spirit of reverence for this planet and for the scarcity of life in the universe. What we do here will set precedents for further human habitation of the solar system, and will suggest models for the human relationship to Earth's environment as well. Thus Mars occupies a special place in history, and this should be remembered when we make the necessary decisions concerning life here."

I'll use the character's name. These is from a 30-minute version of The Complete Works of William Shakespere (abridged)

Billy Bob: Never was there a story of more woe, than of Juliet, and her Flameo

Bob: I'm not actually gay.

Billy Bob: Romeo

Barfing Bob: Oh, thank god!

(I can't remember the 1st, I think it was this though:)
French-Canadian Bob: What are you doing?

Barfing Bob: Barfing

F-C Bob: Why?

Barfing Bob: They like it!

("Did" Hamlet in, like, 4 seconds)

Spongebob: Now, lets do it backwards!

And finally:

Boblicious: (gigling uncontrolably)

Anti-Bob: You think your blacker than I is?!

"It is the dark side of liberty.  A man is not hindered by what cannot be done, so twisted men like Duer apply that liberty to their greed."

Ethan Saunders, The Whiskey Rebels

"I'm a patriot, Captain Saunders, just like you.  This country began in a flash of brilliance, but look at what has happened.  The suffering of human chattel ignored by our government, a small cadre of rich men dictating our national policies.  In the West, men die-they die, sir-as a consequence of this greed.  This is not why my husband fought in the Revolution.  I suspect it's not what you fought for either.  Now I fight to change it.  Better anarchy than an unjust nation that masquerades as a beacon of righteousness.  That would be worse than outright tyranny.

A few gems from the Princess Bride:

'Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.' -The Man in Black

'Sonny, true love is the greatest thing, in the world-except for a nice MLT - mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe...' -Miracle Max

'Prince Humperdinck: First things first, to the death.
Westley: No. To the pain.
Prince Humperdinck: I don't think I'm quite familiar with that phrase.
Westley: I'll explain and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand, you warthog faced buffoon.
Prince Humperdinck: That may be the first time in my life a man has dared insult me.
Westley: It won't be the last. To the pain means the first thing you will lose will be your feet below the ankles. Then your hands at the wrists. Next your nose.
Prince Humperdinck: And then my tongue I suppose, I killed you too quickly the last time. A mistake I don't mean to duplicate tonight.
Westley: I wasn't finished. The next thing you will lose will be your left eye followed by your right.
Prince Humperdinck: And then my ears, I understand let's get on with it.
Westley: WRONG. Your ears you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing," will echo in your perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever.
Prince Humperdinck: I think you're bluffing.
Westley: It's possible, Pig, I might be bluffing. It's conceivable, you miserable, vomitous mass, that I'm only lying here because I lack the strength to stand. But, then again... perhaps I have the strength after all.
[slowly rises and points sword directly at the prince]
Westley: DROP... YOUR... SWORD!

Some recent lego talk from Sips and Sjin of the Yogscast:

Sjin: "Did dinosaurs swim?"
Sips: "Uhh, some did, yes. The tyrannosaurus rex had a distant cousin that had a dorsal fin on the back but still had ridiculously long legs and very short arms and made swimming look fantastic."
Sjin: "How did he do the butterfly stroke, then?"
Sips: "Well, he didn't."
Sips: "I tried to picture that-"
Sips: "He told everybody that he could, then when it came down to it when, uh, when the ankylosaurus was like 'yeah, prove it, T-rex' he was just like 'uhhh, I'm a bit busy now, gotta go!' And then he just, like, sorta stomped away on his big-apple legs and, um, disappeared forever, yeah."
Sjin: "Ohh."
Sips: "That's how they became extinct. Through shame."

I have come to trust each of you with my life -- but I have also heard murmurs of discontent. I share your concerns.
We are trained for espionage; we would be legends, but the records are sealed. Glory in battle is not our way.
Think of our heroes; the Silent Step, who defeated a nation with a single shot. Or the Ever Alert, who kept armies at bay with hidden facts.
These giants do not seem to give us solace here, but they are not all that we are.
Before the network, there was the fleet. Before diplomacy, there were soldiers!
Our influence stopped the rachni, but before that we held the line!
Our influence stopped the krogan, but before that, we held the line!
Our influence will stop Saren; in the battle today, we will hold the line!”

Re: Quotes, Quotes and More Quotes ... The Sequel

A man, by working 24 hours a day, could multiply himself 3 times. To multiply himself more than 3 time the only recourse is to train others to take over some of his work.

It is said that a wise man who stands firm is a statesman, and a foolish man who stands firm is a catastrophe.

Responsibility is a unique concept... You may share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You may delegate it, but it is still with you... If responsibility is rightfully yours, no evasion, or ignorance or passing the blame can shift the burden to someone else. Unless you can point you finger at the man who is responsible when something goes wrong, then you have never had anyone really responsible.

The Rickover Center? Basically, you can think of it as a BFG: Big Fruiting Ginger. It's three stories of red brick, and it sucks out the soul of every student to pass through its doors.

several months later

You know, I think I've changed my mind.  The Rickover is more like a gaping maw, because prototype is the belly of the beast. You're lured into a false sense of security because you no longer see the gnashing fangs. Then you realise you never see the light of day, which is bad enough on its own. Only once you get to crew work do you realise you're succumbing to a slower and more painful death as the acid burns you away.

No, you clearly don't know who you're talking to, so let me clue you in. I am not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger. A guy opens his door and gets shot and you think that of me? Erast Fandorin: If you live in a state, you should either cherish it or leave it.  Anything else is parasitism or mere lackeys gossip.

Varvara Suvarova: There is a third possibility.  An unjust state can be demolished and a new one built in it's place.

Erast Fandorin: Unfortunately, a state is not a house. It is more like a tree. It is not built, it grows of its own accord following the laws of nature and it is a long business. It is not a stonemason that is needed but a gardener.

Anwar Affendi: (having killed many people in the service of a greater cause) Do you know who I am? I am the midwife. I help the child to enter the world. And my arms are covered in blood and mucus.

From our very own fourms:

Making magic items is like programming a computer code. Each Wizard does it a little differently, and some follow Good Magic Practices -- the world doesn't end if the user does something weird to the bag -- while others are perhaps more sloppy :) - Kouk (epic quote, imo)

Re: Quotes, Quotes and More Quotes ... The Sequel

"Some people would say my paintings show a future world and maybe they do, but I paint from reality. I put several things and ideas together, and perhaps, when I have finished, it could show the future. If people want to interpret my work as warnings about too much overpopulation, disease and mechanization in the future, then that is up to them. I like to combine human beings, creatures and biomechanics. And I love to work with bones - they are elemental and function and, after all, are part of human beings. I have many bones in my home in Zurich, and I study them and use them as models. Some people say my work is often depressing and pessimistic, with the emphasis on death, blood, overcrowding, strange beings and so on, but I don't really think it is. There is hope and a kind of beauty in there somewhere, if you look for it." - H.R. Giger

"Sometimes people only see horrible, terrible things in my paintings." - H.R. Giger

"The Dutch Customs once thought my pictures were photos. Where on Earth did they think I could have photographed my subjects? In Hell, perhaps?" - H.R. Giger

"Hit a man once, and he'll hit you right back. Hit a man twice, and he'll wait for revenge. Hit a man so many times he forgets why you started hitting him in the first place, and he'll cower every time you raise your hand."
