Card based mechanics...

Just wondering how well card based mechanics work on forums like this for example I've just got into through the breach RPG and was going to put up a "GM wanted" thread but if card mechanics aren't great for online gaming I won't bother :)

I've never played  a card game here.. I see   Magic  and a coupe other games  advertised?

in my space game  I have a  card game based on dice  rolls with the   numbers  assigned to certain cards?.. you'd  almost have to have a list posted   with teh numbers to cross  reference  'powers' 'magics' ect ?.. I dunno...

Go see if they ever added Castle Falkenstein on here.
If they didn't, there is a possibility they didn't do so because of the card-based system.
If they did, see if you can find a way to play with the "roller," and see what you think.

I don't see Castle Falkenstein in the system list for the dice roller.

I'm not sure if that's the only reason:  the deck of 52 playing cards and the deck of 54 playing cards are listed, but the symbol set for those is public domain.  I rather think (but can't be 100% sure) that intellectual property issues may have precluded the inclusion of CF.  I seem to remember a discussion on adding the Deck of Fate that ended with that conclusion about it, though.

I wish the news were better, but there it is.

About the only work-around is to use a die roll with a translation table.  Take into account while doing this the concept of sampling without replacement:  most card decks need the ability to produce unique results (e.g., we don't really want anyone drawing the Ace of Spades when someone else has already drawn it.)  Fortunately, the dice roller accommodates this easily.

As a quick-n-dirty example, a Tarot deck generally contains 78 cards:  22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana.  To simulate a draw from this deck of any number of cards, N, one would roll Nd78 and set the switches for "record each die" and "unique die", then consult the translation table.

Each time the deck is consulted in this way would result in a new "shuffle", so it would be needful to "draw as many cards" as one anticipates are needed in one roll, then record them somewhere (GM's Scratchpad or other private place) for use when needed.

Castle Falkenstein uses a deck of regular playing cards, so no issues with fancy symbols.  The reason the system is not included in the dice roller is that normal decks of 52 and 54 cards were already in there, and perfectly usable with the game, so there was no need to add them again with a different name.

In reply to bigbadron (msg # 5):

Thanks for that.  I do remember IP being an issue with the Deck of Fate, though.  I'll have to look at Castle Falkenstein again. (I thought it had a special deck for some reason.  I hate what advancing age does to one's memory.)
